Human Rights Tribunal finds Catholic school board guilty of discrimination

From Life Site News. (H/T Mary)

Excerpt:

The Ontario Human Rights Tribunal has ordered a Catholic school board to compensate three members of a prominent UFO cult after finding the board guilty of religious discrimination.

Daniel, Michel, and Sylvie Chabot, members of the Raelian cult, were hired in November 2006 by the Conseil Scolaire Catholique Franco-Nord to offer ‘emotional pedagogy’ training sessions for teachers.  They delivered such sessions through what they call the Academy of Pleasurology and Emotional Intelligence (APEI).

The Catholic board chose to end the contract in January 2007 after discovering their membership in the cult, which claims that humans were planted on Earth by benevolent extraterrestrials.

On December 15th, Tribunal vice president Michelle Flaherty ruled that the board had discriminated against the three siblings on the basis of their beliefs.  The parties had agreed to mediation, but asked the Tribunal to determine if the human rights code was violated.  The decision does not reveal how much the board must pay in penalty.

Here’s a quick bio of the Tribunal vice president:

Michelle Flaherty has extensive experience in administrative, labour, human rights and employment law and has represented both employers and employees. From 1999 until 2000, Ms. Flaherty articled as a Law Clerk to Madame Justice Claire L’Heureux-Dubé of the Supreme Court of Canada. She also taught for a number of years at the University of Ottawa in the areas of equality, human rights and labour law. Her community involvement includes volunteering for several organizations in the Ottawa area. Ms. Flaherty is a graduate of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa.

i thought that the Catholic employer should have been more careful. But then it struck me – even asking if the person is an orthodox Catholic could be considered discrimination and land you in a Human Rights Tribunal. After all, campus clubs have been banned in Canada for requiring that executive members sign a statement of faith. So I guess the practice of religion is now illegal in Canada.

I found an interesting article assessing Canada’s three famous feminist Supreme Court justices, who are notorious for judicial activism to favor a left-wing agenda. Think of them as 3 clones of Ruth Bader-Ginsburg.

Milwaukee teacher union fights for right to taxpayer-funded Viagra

AP story is her. (H/T ECM)

Excerpt:

With the district in a financial crisis and hundreds of its members facing layoffs, the Milwaukee teachers union is taking a peculiar stand: fighting to get its taxpayer-funded Viagra back.

The union has asked a judge to order the school board to again include Pfizer Inc.’s erectile dysfunction drug and similar pills in its health insurance plans.

The filing is the latest in a two-year legal campaign in which the union has argued, so far unsuccessfully, that the board’s policy of excluding erectile dysfunction drugs discriminates against male employees. The union says Viagra, Cialis, Levitra and others are necessary treatment for “an exclusively gender-related condition.”

But lawyers for the school board say the drugs were excluded in 2005 to save money, and there is no discrimination because they are used primarily for recreational sex and not out of medical necessity.

Teacher unions are overwhelmingly Democrat.

My previous story on Viagra was about how Democrats voted in favor of subsidizing Viagra for child molesters and rapists. Democrats think that abortions and drugs to provide recreational sex are “health care”. In Canada, the government provides taxpayer-funded sex changes and in vitro fertilization because they are “human rights”. Is that the direction that the Democrats want to take us in? Who is supposed to pay for all these unnecessary goodies?

LA students to be taught that AZ immigration law is un-American

Story from Fox News.

Excerpt:

The Los Angeles Unified School District school board wants all public school students in the city to be taught that Arizona’s new immigration law is un-American.

[…]In an e-mail to FOXNews.com, school district spokesman Robert Alaniz elaborated:

“The Board of Education directed the Superintendent to ensure that LAUSD civics and history classes discuss the recent laws enacted in Arizona in the context of the American values of unity, diversity, and Equal Protection for all.   Much like a number of controversial periods and laws that are part of our history and are currently taught including:

  • Slavery
  • Jim Crowe laws and segregation
  • Native American reservations
  • Residential schools (for Native Americans)
  • The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882
  • Anti-Irish racism in the 19th century
  • Racism against immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe in the 20th century
  • Anti-Semitism
  • Internment camps for Japanese Americans during World War II
  • The Mexican Repatriation Program (1929-1939).”

Asking people for a driver’s license in a traffic stop is the same as slavery and segregation?

Another argument for homeschooling or private schools.
