This lecture is special to me, because I bought a VHS tape of it from Access Research Network just after I started working full-time, and watched it a million times. A lot of people come to their convictions about God’s existence because of parents or church or intuitions, but for me it’s all about the scientific evidence. This lecture changed my life. I wish more people taught their children about this evidence! This lecture was delivered at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

About the speaker:

Dr. Bradley received his B.S. in Engineering Science and his Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Texas in Austin.

Dr. Bradley taught for eight years at the Colorado School of Mines before assuming a position as Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University (TAMU) in 1976.

During his 24 years at Texas A&M, Dr. Bradley served as Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University and as Director of the Polymer Technology Center, and received five College of Engineering Research Awards. He has received over $4,500,000 in research grants and has published over 140 technical articles and book chapters. He has also co-authored “The Mystery Of Life’s Origin: Reassessing Current Theories. He is a Fellow of the American Society for Materials and of the American Scientific Affiliation and serves as a consultant for many Fortune 500 companies.

He currently serves as Distinguished Professor of Engineering at Baylor University.

Introduction:

  • At the beginning of the 20th century, people believed that the progress of science was pointing away from an intelligent Creator and Designer, and towards naturalism
  • A stream of new discoveries has shifted the support of science towards theism, and away from naturalism
  • Richard Dawkins, an atheist, says that nature only has the appearance of design, but that if you look closer, naturalistic mechanisms can account for the appearance of design
  • When deciding between design and apparent design (“designoid”), it matters whether you think there is an intelligence there to do the designing

Evidence #1: The Big Bang:

  • an eternal “steady state” universe is more compatible with naturalism, but a created universe is more compatible with a Creator
  • In 1929, Hubble used telescopes to observe that the light from distant galaxies was redshifted. The further away galaxies were, the faster they were moving away. Therefore, space is expanding in all directions, suggesting an explosive origin of the universe
  • In 1965, the discovery of the cosmic microwave background radiation matched a prediction of the Big Bang cosmology, and of the creation event
  • In 1992, the COBE space telescope allowed us to test four specific predictions of the Big Bang model, especially the predictions for light element abundances (hydrogen and helium), which matched the predictions of the creation model

Evidence #2: Simple mathematical structure of the physical laws

  • the simple mathematical structure of natural laws allows us to understand these laws, make discoveries, and engineer solutions to problems
  • early scientists saw the mathematical structure of the universe to mean that nature was designed by an intelligent to be understood
  • the fundamental equations of the laws of the universe can be easily written on one side of one sheet of paper
  • Eugene Wigner’s famous paper, “The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics in the Physical Sciences” makes the point that this simple structure is an unexpected gift that allows is to do science

Evidence #3: fine-tuning of the physical constants and quantities

  • in order for any kind of complex life to survive, we need stars that provide energy within specific ranges for long periods of time
  • in order for any kind of complex life to survive, we need planets with stable orbits that will not suffer from extreme temperature swings as it varies in distance from its star
  • in order for any kind of complex life to survive, we need stable atomic structure
  • in order for any kind of complex life to survive, we need to have chemical diversity and correct relative abundances of each element
  • organic life has minimum requirements: process energy, store information, replicate, and you can’t fulfill those functions if there is only one element, e.g. – hydrogen
  • the energy level from the photons from the sun have to match the energy levels of the different elements in order to drive the chemical bonding needed for life
  • These requirements for life of any imaginable type depend on the values of the constants and quantities. The constants and quantities cannot vary much from what they are, or the universe will lose the characteristics (above) that allow it to support complex life of any imaginable time
  • For example, ratio of strong force to electromagnetic force:
    – if 2% larger, then no stable hydrogen, no long-lived stars, no compounds containing hydrogen, e.g. – water
    – if 5% smaller, no stable stars, heavy hydrogen would be unstable, few elements other than hydrogen

Evidence #4: initial conditions for habitability

  • Universe: expansion rate of the universe must be fast enough to avoid a re-collapse, but slow enough to allow matter to clump together and form stars and planets for complex life to live on
  • Planet: right distance from the star to get the right climate
  • Planet: right mass to retain the right atmosphere

Evidence #5: origin of life and information theory

  • It’s possible to explain every process in an automobile engine using plain old naturalistic mechanisms – no supernatural explanation is necessary to understand the processes
  • But the existence of engine itself: engineering all the parts has to be explained by the work of an intelligence
  • Similarly, we can understand how living systems work, but the existence of the living systems requires an intelligence
  • Even the simplest living system has to perform minimal function: capture energy, store information and replicate
  • Living systems are composed of objects like proteins that are composed of sequences of components complex such that the order of the components gives the overall structure function
  • Developing the components for a simple living cell is very improbable – even given the large number of galaxies, stars and planets in the universe, it is unlikely that complex, embodied life would exist anywhere in the universe

Evidence #6: more initial conditions for habitability

  • Location within the galaxy: you need to be away from the center of the galaxy, because the explosions from dying stars, and excessive radiation will kill life
  • Location within the galaxy: you need to be close enough to the center in order catch the heavy elements you need for life from the explosions of other stars
  • Location within the galaxy: the best location is between two arms of  a spiral galaxy, where you can get the heavy elements you need from dying stars, but without being hit with explosions and harmful radiation
  • Star mass: determines rate at which the sun burns, determines the energy level of photons that are used to drive chemical bonding reactions, determines the length of time the star will be stable
  • Star mass: star mass must be the correct value in order to allow liquid water on the planet’s surface, while still preserving stable orbit

I wish there was more curiosity about science in churches, and young Christians understood how critical science is for grounding the rationality of the Christian worldview. We need to be training up more scientists who think about the big questions, like Dr. Walter Bradley.

Transgender woman gets light sentence for attempted axe murder of three

Guns are banned in Australia, so there was no chance of self-defense
The attacker (pictured above) had never met any of the three victims

This story out of Australia is about a very controversial topic. Basically, a biological man pleaded not guilty because of insanity, after attacking three random people with an axe. Please be careful with your comments as well, as big technology companies censor anything written about transgenderism.

Australia News reported: (WARNING: article has graphic photos of one of the victims)

Transgender Amati, a trade union organiser, went prowling with the axe after storming out of a disastrous Tinder date hours earlier.

She was dosed up on psychedelic “love drug” MDA, antidepressants, cannabis, vodka and transgender hormones, the court heard.

Just after 1am she wrote online: “One day I am going to kill a lot of people”, and sent a message to one of the women she had been on a date with saying: “Most people deserve to die, I hate people”.

She listened to the dark-themed song Flatline by US metal band Periphery and changed her Facebook status to: “Humans are only able to destroy, to hate, so that is what I shall do.”

After doing a lap of the shop and attacking Ben she swung the axe at Sharon, who was at the counter buying milk.

Amati tried to hit her a second time as she lay sprawled on the ground but narrowly missed.

CCTV showed her then calmly walking away across the forecourt.

She also tried to kill a homeless man nearby, then feigned unconsciousness when cops tracked her down in the front garden of a house.

Her police interview hours after the bloody rampage showed her coldly refusing to answer questions.

In a steady voice, Amati says over and over: “I respectfully choose to exercise my right to remain silent”.

Her lawyers tried to claim insanity but that was rejected by the jury.

While on remand she spent time in three women’s jails where she bullied other inmates, reports news.com.au.

The Australia News article was one of the only ones to provide details of the injuries, and the impact to the victims.

Let’s look at the first victim:

A court heard the blade missed his brain by millimetres as it sliced through his nose and eye socket.

Plastic surgeons rebuilt his face with four titanium plates. He can feel the one round his eye moving under his skin when he touches it.

Ben, whose wife was pregnant, did not want cops to tell her what happened but later spoke to her by phone from hospital.

He was vomiting blood that was pouring down his throat from his mangled nose.

Ben spoke out today two years on from the January 2017 horror in Sydney, Australia, to hit out at Amati’s sentence.

He said she was “calculating” and “not remorseful”, adding: “She’ll do her time easily and get paroled in mid-2021. It’s played out perfectly for her, perhaps better than she expected.”

The attacker received a sentence far below standard:

Amati was handed a sentence of nine years with a non-parole period of 4½ years after being convicted of three counts of attempted murder.

A petition demanding a tougher sentence says the standard penalty for attempted murder is ten years without parole.

So the standard sentence is ten years without parole, and this person will serve less than half the minimum sentence prescribed by law. How did that happen? Who knows. The light sentence for this attacker certainly won’t deter any similar future attacks, which is bad for the future victims of similar attacks.

Also interesting is that carrying a defensive weapon of any kind is prohibited in Australia. So the victims were defenseless. They just had to call the police while bleeding out, and wait for them to arrive. If the victims had tried to defend themselves with a defensive weapon, they would have been arrested, and charged with a crime.

The Australia Telegraph explains:

Possessing any object specifically for the purpose of self-defence, lethal or non-lethal, is a criminal offence. There are many women, raped and/or murdered, who would have been liable to prosecution had they been carrying anything that might have saved them.

[…]Prohibited self-defence items include pepper sprays, mace, clubs and personal Tasers. In some States carrying a pocketknife is illegal and even wearing a bulletproof vest is banned.

It was interesting to read reader comments about the attack, too. When I read the story on the radically leftist Buzz Feed, I noticed in the comments how one transgender person said that the victims of the attack were “OK”. A commenter replied and said that the victims were not “OK”. This comment – that the victims were not OK – was met with multiple responses claiming that the commenter was “transphobic” and “hateful” and unable to “understand words with more than 4 letters in them.” I thought that was interesting.

Five states passing legislation to allow abortion up to 40 weeks, and after birth

CNN: Unborn baby born at 21 weeks is "thriving"
CNN: Unborn baby born at 21 weeks is now “thriving” at 3 years old

Last week the Governor of New York signed a law that makes abortion legal right up to birth. But other Democrat governors are willing to do the same thing in their states. We’re really seeing Democrats reveal their real priorities now. It’s not job creation, it’s infanticide.

So Virginia is going infanticide, next. Here is video of a Democrat legislator being questioned about her infanticide bill:

So will the bill get signed into law? Here’s the latest report about the Democrat Governor of Virginia from The Federalist:

When asked about the controversial late term abortion bill presented in Virginia’s House of Delegates this week, Governor Ralph Northam said a fully developed child born in the third trimester would be kept alive, but the physician and mother would get to discuss and decide whether to take its life or not.

“If a mother is in labor…the infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and mother,” Northam said on WTOP’s “Ask The Governor” segment this morning.

Here’s the Governor in his own words:

Just to be clear, if people are deciding whether the baby should live or die after it’s been born, that’s infanticide. Babies are viable at 22 weeks, so there will be abortions being performed on viable babies, from 22-36 weeks, and even after birth.

Next, there’s Rhode Island.

The author of the Rhode Island bill, Edith Ajello, says:

[…]The Rhode Island Reproductive Health Care Act, co-sponsored by state Sen. Gayle L. Goldin and Rep. Edith H. Ajello, would strip away even minor, common-sense abortion regulations – ones that a strong majority of Americans support. It would eliminate all protections for unborn babies and codify Roe v. Wade into state law in case the U.S. Supreme Court overturns the ruling.

Ajello described protections for unborn babies as “insidiously restrictive, harmful and patriarchal reproductive laws.” Her bill would even repeal the state partial-birth abortion ban and fetal homicide law, which provides justice to pregnant mothers whose unborn babies are killed by abusive partners, drunken drivers or others whose illegal actions cause the death of the unborn baby.

The ACLU, which supports Ajello’s bill, has claimed fetal homicide laws are problematic because they treat “a fetus as a person.”

[…]Earlier this month, [Rhode Island Gov. Gina] Raimondo promised to support the pro-abortion bill in her State of the State address, NBC 10 reports.

Life News reports that more states are introducing legislation to remove all restrictions on abortion:

New York, Vermont, New Mexico and now Rhode Island politicians are pushing radical pro-abortion legislation that could legalize the killing of unborn babies for basically any reason up to birth in their states.

Earlier this week, Rhode Island lawmakers introduced legislation to keep abortion legal and unrestricted if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, the AP reports.

So it’s New York, Virginia, Rhode Island, New Mexico and Vermont.

The only silver lining to this cloud that I can think of is that Democrat voters who don’t pay attention to the news will hear about this and reconsider whether they want to be on the side of people who don’t think that a baby is a baby, even when it’s just about to be born, or has just been born.
