Wind, solar or nuclear: which is best for costs, electricity prices and the environment?

I bought a new book by a famous environmentalist Dr. Michael Shellenberger. He used to be a huge advocate for renewable energy (wind and solar). The book is about why he changed his mind and now prefers nuclear power. He has a long pedigree of environmental activism. I agree with him, so I wanted to get the book to learn how to argue it. For you, I have a short video instead of the book.

Here’s a 17-minute TED talk that he did:

And an article from Quillette that has the full text of the talk.

Here’s the part I thought was the most interesting, where he explains the problems with solar and wind:

The first was around land use. Electricity from solar roofs costs about twice as much as electricity from solar farms, but solar and wind farms require huge amounts of land. That, along with the fact that solar and wind farms require long new transmissions lines, and are opposed by local communities and conservationists trying to preserve wildlife, particularly birds.

Another challenge was the intermittent nature of solar and wind energies. When the sun stops shining and the wind stops blowing, you have to quickly be able to ramp up another source of energy.

I was having a discussion with one of the software architects at my company, who LOVES wind power. I raised these objections with him, especially about the birds and the subsidies for wind and solar, and the higher electricity prices. His response was that he was confident that investing in the renewables would produce technological solutions to those problems.

Look what Schellenberger says, though:

What kills big, threatened, and endangered birds—birds that could go extinct—like hawks, eagles, owls, and condors, are wind turbines.

In fact, wind turbines are the most serious new threat to important bird species to emerge in decades.

[…]Solar farms have similarly large ecological impacts. Building a solar farm is a lot like building any other kind of farm. You have to clear the whole area of wildlife.

In order to build one of the biggest solar farms in California the developers hired biologists to pull threatened desert tortoises from their burrows, put them on the back of pickup trucks, transport them, and cage them in pens where many ended up dying.

[…][S]cientists recently warned that wind turbines are on the verge of making one species, the Hoary bat, a migratory bat species, go extinct.

More environmental impact:

You can make solar panels cheaper and wind turbines bigger, but you can’t make the sun shine more regularly or the wind blow more reliably. I came to understand the environmental implications of the physics of energy. In order to produce significant amounts of electricity from weak energy flows, you just have to spread them over enormous areas. In other words, the trouble with renewables isn’t fundamentally technical—it’s natural.

Higher costs:

Dealing with energy sources that are inherently unreliable, and require large amounts of land, comes at a high economic cost.

There’s been a lot of publicity about how solar panels and wind turbines have come down in cost. But those one-time cost savings from making them in big Chinese factories have been outweighed by the high cost of dealing with their unreliability.

There was a news article from the radically leftist UK Guardian recently that found that 40% of UK solar panels were manufactured by firms linked to Chinese slave labor.

Consumer electricity prices rise, disproportionately affecting the poor:

Consider California. Between 2011–17 the cost of solar panels declined about 75 percent, and yet our electricity prices rose five times more than they did in the rest of the U.S. It’s the same story in Germany, the world leader in solar and wind energy. Its electricity prices increased 50 percent between 2006–17, as it scaled up renewables.

The same thing happened in Canada, when they switched to renewables. According to a recent study, the province of Ontario saw a “21% increase in the overall average cost of power in the province over the period 2007-2013”.

Schellenberger likes nuclear energy:

Germany’s carbon emissions have been flat since 2009, despite an investment of $580 billion by 2025 in a renewables-heavy electrical grid, a 50 percent rise in electricity cost.

Meanwhile, France produces one-tenth the carbon emissions per unit of electricity as Germany and pays little more than half for its electricity. How? Through nuclear power.

Then, under pressure from Germany, France spent $33 billion on renewables, over the last decade. What was the result? A rise in the carbon intensity of its electricity supply, and higher electricity prices, too.

What about all the headlines about expensive nuclear and cheap solar and wind? They are largely an illusion resulting from the fact that 70 to 80 percent of the costs of building nuclear plants are up-front, whereas the costs given for solar and wind don’t include the high cost of transmission lines, new dams, or other forms of battery.

He talks a lot about whether nuclear power is safe, and what to do with the waste. I found it compelling. My architect friend didn’t ask me about that, but he did mention the cost of nuclear.

Here’s what I should have said (but didn’t):

All of the waste fuel from 45 years of the Swiss nuclear program can fit, in canisters, on a basketball court-like warehouse, where like all spent nuclear fuel, it has never hurt a fly.

By contrast, solar panels require 17 times more materials in the form of cement, glass, concrete, and steel than do nuclear plants, and create over 200 times more waste.

We tend to think of solar panels as clean, but the truth is that there is no plan anywhere to deal with solar panels at the end of their 20 to 25 year lifespan.

I did send him the lecture and the article after, though.

If you think this is an interesting topic, why not share the TED talk and the article with your friends? Some people vote Democrat just for renewable energy. I don’t like Democrat policies, so I have to be equipped to know how to respond to anything that anyone might like about them. Christian conservatives like me who care about things like abortion, marriage, religious liberty, etc. have to become experts at education policy, health care policy, energy policy, foreign policy, etc. I have to be able to debate anyone about any policy.

Biden administration: school lunch funding depends on support for transgenderism

We have a lot of problems in the country right now. A porous border. Rising inflation. Bailing out Ukraine with taxpayer dollars. A green energy policy that raises gas and electricity prices. A crisis of grooming in the schools. And the ongoing catastrophes like abortion and the welfare-funded breakdown of the nuclear family. But Joe Biden doesn’t care. He is focused on LGBT rights.

Here’s the latest by Joy Pullmann (my favorite Federalist writer) at The Federalist:

K-12 schools must allow boys into girls’ private areas to obtain federal funds for lunches, breakfasts, and snacks, the Biden administration announced this month. A U.S. Department of Education spokesman told The Federalist the Biden administration’s press releases from several agencies announcing this policy will be followed by formal rulemaking in June.

[…]Under this new demand, establishments that accept any federal food funding, including food stamps, must also allow males who claim to be female to access female private spaces, such as showers, bathrooms, and sleeping areas. Such organizations must also follow protocols such as requiring staff to use inaccurate pronouns to describe transgender people and allowing male staff to dress as women while on the job.

So, parents of religious children, and religious school workers, are good enough to pay taxes for the government programs. But they’re not good enough to receive money from government programs. That’s what you can expect from the secular left.

And Joy Pullmann has another article from The Federalist, related to this. She talks about how she can no longer send her Christian kids to the “4-H” organization:

This spring I got an email from 4-H, a club I participated in as a child, effectively communicating that my Christian family need not apply to summer camps and other activities sponsored by the quasi-public organization. (County governments often sponsor 4-H activities.) This email was signed by a 4-H staffer who put pronouns in his signature and told me, “Youth are assigned cabins based on gender indicated on the 4-H camp application and registration,” suggesting children were roomed by gender identity rather than sex.

[…]Given 4-H national’s commitment to the toxic “diversity, equity, inclusion” ideology, the fact that my Christian kids now cannot equally access lots of their programming due to 4-H’s choice to sexualize their activities was no surprise. But I still wanted to see in writing that my red county in my red state was indeed giving tax breaks and other government privileges to an organization that might room children overnight with troubled people of the opposite sex against their parents’ will. The answer is yes.

It’s not just the 4-H organization, it’s a lot of taxpayer-funded institutions:

It’s not just places kids get naked. It’s everywhere. I cannot take my children to the public library anymore, either, because the shelves are so full of pornographic and hostile books that it’s not a safe place for them. There, too, self-righteous LGBT activism has resulted in effectively banning my children from yet another public place and weaponizing my own tax dollars against my children’s safety.

The shelves and displays in our library are full of books telling my children lies such as that “men can become women” and “some boys have girl brains” and “gender is a social construct.”

So again, you have Christian families who have to pay taxes to the Biden government, and then the Biden government turns around and gives their money to anti-Christian groups. So, we’re good enough to pay taxes, but not good enough to get the benefit of those tax dollars.

National School Board Association wanted Biden to deploy military against parents

I know that a lot of people put their children into schools, thinking that the schools will teach children useful skills that will help them to get jobs and move out. Unfortunately, it seems as though the school boards, teacher unions and education bureaucrats don’t want to help parents. In fact, they view parents as their enemies. They want to indoctrinate children, and they want parents to let them.

Here’s a news story from Daily Wire:

The National School Boards Association (NSBA) considered calling for the federal government to use the “Army National Guard and its Military Police” against parents who made threats toward school officials before deleting the language from its September 29 letter to President Joe Biden, according to an independent review released on Friday.

This is the letter that the school boards sent to the Biden administration, asking for the FBI to investigate parents for “domestic terrorism”. What domestic terrorism? Opposing the indoctrination of their kids in transgenderism and critical race theory.

More:

Days later, Attorney General Merrick Garland directed the FBI to investigate a recent spike in “harassment, intimidation, and threats of violence” against school board members — a move seen by many parents as an attempt to chill free speech among those concerned about progressive curricula in public schools.

The idea of using the military against “domestic terrorist” parents seems to have been fine with the Biden administration, since they collaborated with the National School Board Association on the letter that the National School Board Association eventually sent to the Biden administration.

The Washington Free Beacon explains:

The country’s largest school board association collaborated with the Biden White House before sending a controversial letter calling on the FBI to investigate parents as potential domestic terrorists, according to previously unreported emails.

[…]The emails also show that the White House asked the association for examples of threats against school board members days before Attorney General Merrick Garland created a task force of officials from the FBI and the Justice Department to determine how to prosecute alleged crimes at school board meetings.

The letter makes clear that the White House was aware of the letter before it was released, while raising questions about whether the White House colluded with the association on the letter to prompt federal action.

So what exactly is it that the Biden administration wants to enforce with the military? Well, maybe they don’t want parents objecting to what this teacher is doing, as reported in The Post Millennial:

As if things could not go more downhill from an elementary school teacher suggesting that sexual orientation and gender identity is suitable classroom curriculum for 3-year-old children, an unidentified school teacher took to Facebook to post a series of disturbing confessions.

The teacher posted in a “Trans, Intersex, and Non-Binary School Professionals” group on Facebook saying, “So this is me feeling my best teacher self because I’m wearing panties on a work day for the first time ever and I feel so good!”

He goes on to identify his appearance to the group as “a tall bearded demiboy with pomaded hair and glasses, wearing a purple and white checked shirt, a gray sweater vest, and a brown jacket with black jeans.” For those not keeping up on the infinitely expanding gender dictionary, “demiboy” is someone who identifies as male only in part.

The teacher continued on to confess his jitters before coming out with his sexuality and gender identity to a group of children:
“I signed up to lead an affinity group for LGBTQIA+ students at my school a while back. The first meeting is this afternoon, and I’m going to be coming out to a bunch of high schoolers as bi [bisexual] and enby [non-binary]. I’m a bit nervous. Good vibes/encouragement are needed and welcome.”

Affinity groups are groups, typically reserved for those of specific disability, religion, race or ethnicity, so students can come together to discuss their common identities or interests.

Amidst what is being deemed the “Groomer Epidemic,” with 135 school teachers and aides being charged with sex crimes in 2022 alone, there are a concerning amount of teachers targeting these groups of children who already feel ostracized in one way or another to satisfy their own perversions.

I think what the secular leftists are saying is that if you disapprove of this person teaching your children, then you are domestic terrorist who needs to be silenced using the military.

We have an election in 2022.
