Two men intervene to prevent an attempted rape in Georgia

Zach Somerset may be homeless, but he certainly has a heart.

“When it comes down to someone else’s safety, I am going to put my life on the line to protect someone else,” said Somerset.

Symrna police say the 21 year-old and his friend, Shawn Thompson are heroes. Investigators say they stopped 27 year-old Maurice Jackson from raping a 15 year-old girl.

“I wouldn’t have expected that guy to do that because he was just a normal acting person, but he just spaced out that night,” said Somerset.

It happened a little more than a week ago while Somerset, Thompson, Jackson and the victim were walking along Church Rd. near South Cobb Drive.

“We decided to go get something to eat and somehow the group got split up and me and Zach ended up in one group and they ended up like a couple hundred feet behind us,” said Thompson.

“We heard a scream,” said Somerset.

“I’m talking about like a traumatizing scream that I can not even forget,” said Thompson.

“I just kept repeating, keep screaming so I can find you. Keep screaming,” said Somerset.

Both men say they ran to the voice and came across Jackson and the girl.

“We saw her in the bushes. He had her held down you know, punching her in the face and in the ribs,” said Thompson.

“I just grabbed him basically and I was like dude get off of her and he wouldn’t get off of her,” said Somerset.

“I was like you are crazy. This is a friend of mine I am not going to let you do this man. So I grabbed him around his throat and his stomach and I picked him up and I told him I’m going to kill you dude. You better calm down right quick,” said Thompson.

Thompson says Jackson eventually calmed down, the victim ran away and he held Jackson until police came. Investigators say both men prevented a bad situation from getting worse

“I never thought anything like that would happen,” Somerset said.

It’s important to highlight stories like this to show that men must sometimes use force in order to protect others, and that this aggression and use of force is a good thing, which we should be grateful for. Using force by itself is not necessarily bad. What determines goodness and badness is the context.

Man gives his life to save the child of a vacationing family

A 65-year-old man drowned while trying to save a 4-year-old girl struggling in rip currents at Florida’s Honeymoon Island State Park, officials said Monday.

Three children vacationing from Ohio became caught in rip currents at Pet Beach in the southern portion of the state park in Dunedin on Sunday, Florida Department of Environmental Protection spokeswoman Jennifer Diaz told FoxNews.com.

The children’s parents, Kevin and Nicole Monahan, responded and were able to rescue two of them, Bryden, 10, and Ruby, 5, Diaz said.

Alan B. Hall, a resident of Land O’ Lakes, Fla., then noticed the third child was still in distress and he ran into the water to save Lucy, the 4-year-old girl. After grabbing the girl and pushing her out of the current, she was able to swim back to shore. But Hall turned face down in the water, Diaz said.

Hall was retrieved by a boater and was administered CPR on the shore, where he was unresponsive and not breathing. He later died upon arrival at Mease Dunedin Hospital, Diaz said.

The incident remains under investigation by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Diaz said Hall was not related to the unidentified Ohio family. A medical examiner will determine a cause of death, she said.

“The Florida Department of Environmental Protection offers our sincere condolences [to Hall’s relatives],” Diaz said.

Rip currents have been strong off the state park for several days, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

We hear so many negative stories about men in the news that it’s important to balance them out with positive stories.

Petition opposing UK gay marriage law gets 300,000 signatures

From the UK Telegraph. (H/T Dina)

Organisers claimed that their petition had become the biggest public campaign since the 2010 election.

It highlights the support for the traditional definition of marriage as the union of a man and a woman, they said.

Earlier this month, the Government proposed redefining civil marriage laws so that the term can apply to civil unions between same-sex couples.

[…]The Coalition 4 Marriage set up a petition against the plan, which has so far attracted more than 300,200 signatures. The group is calling on the Government to retain the current definition of marriage as the voluntary union between one man and one woman for life.

Colin Hart, the campaign director, said the surge in support since the Government began its consultation was further evidence of the unpopularity of the proposal.

“There has been a staggering response to the petition, launched last month, which shows just how many ordinary men and women care about this issue,” he said.

“I hope the Government will consider the growing opposition to its proposals, which are being pushed without the British people being given an opportunity to make their views clear.”

Mr Cameron is facing a backlash from his supporters, with senior Tory MPs expected to vote against the reforms. MPs have been promised a free vote on the issue, because it is deemed a matter of “conscience”.

However, the Prime Minister said the Conservatives should support homosexual marriage on the grounds that stability and commitment in relationships of any kind should be encouraged.

This is encouraging, because I always think of the UK as being very liberal on social issues. Even the conservatives they have are more fiscal conservatives than social conservatives. A while back I posted a secular case against gay marriage, and I hope that every one of these 300,000 signatories can explain why they believe what they believe in a similar way.
