10 Behaviors for Christian Women to Avoid in a Potential Spouse: part 1 of 10

Note: The following post was written by my friend Laura. On this blog, I have often offered men suggestions about what to ask prospective mates. Laura’s article looks at the problem from the other side, offering women suggestions about what to look out for in a husband candidate. I’ll be posting one per day for the next 10 days.

Apart from the decision to follow Christ, marriage is the biggest decision you will ever make. It is a lifelong commitment that will impact every area of your life for as long as you both shall live. As Jesus’ disciples realized and the apostle Paul taught explicitly, for many people it is better not to marry at all (1 Corinthians 7). But for those who do marry, it must not be entered into lightly. Here are ten behaviors to avoid in men when considering committing for life.

1. Unwillingness to read great books. I put this first because of how critical it is to every other aspect of a man’s life. The reality is that our culture has gone to rubbish. Morally, intellectually, relationally, and spiritually, we are unlikely to learn much of value from those around us. In most cases, we will be harmed, not helped, from the media, from entertainment, from public schools, from our parents’ example, and even in the local church. We must look harder, dig deeper, and be more intentional than generations before us if we hope to become men and women of character, knowledge, wisdom, and excellence.

If you want to find a man worth marrying, start by finding a man who reads the Bible often and who takes it very seriously. The God of the universe, who created all things and knows how all things work, has not left us to figure it all out ourselves. He has given us an invaluable resource, and any man who does not avail himself of this resource at every opportunity for the sake of learning how to live is likely to lead you and your family astray.

Additionally, I strongly recommend you find a man who reads apologetics, economics, military history, and classical literature. Why these areas? As Wintery Knight explains here, “Evidential apologetics teaches you to become focused on truth. Free market economics teaches you how the world works. Military history teaches you gratitude and humility. You can undo the nonsense that you learned about men, women and relationships simply by learning the lessons about human nature found in the classics – Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell, etc.”

If you want a man who knows and obeys the Lord, who understands and applies truth to real world issues, who will lead you well and make wise decisions for you and your children, and who will sacrifice worldly pleasure and the approval of others in order to treat you as a woman ought to be treated, he must be committed to reading great books.

William Lane Craig lectures on failure in the Christian life

I have a key that will unlock a puzzling mystery
I have a key that will unlock a puzzling mystery

I found this audio on Brian Auten’s Apologetics 315 web site.

Here is the MP3 file.

Here is the video:

Intro:

  • the topic of failure is not one that is often discussed by Christians
  • failure #1: failure in the Christian life which is the result of sin
  • failure #2: when a Christian is defeated while trying to serve God
  • the consequences for failure #1 can be worse for the Christian
  • the consequences for failure #2 can be worse for the world as whole
  • how is it possible for a person to fail when they are obeying God? (#2)
  • how can it be that God can call someone to a task then let them fail?
  • failure is not persecution – persecution is normal for Christians
  • failure is not trials – testing is normal for Christians to grow

Bill’s failure:

  • Bill had submitted all the coursework for his second doctoral degree
  • but he had to pass a comprehensive oral examination
  • he failed to pass the comprehensive exam
  • Bill and Jan and his supporters had all prayed for him to pass
  • how could God allow this to happen?

Solution to the problem:

  • God’s will for us may be that we fail at the things we try in life
  • there are things that God may teach us through failure
  • Bill learned that human relationships are more important than careers
  • we need to realize that “success” in life is not worldly success
  • true success is getting to know God well during your life
  • and failure may be the best way to get to know God well
  • it may even be possible to fail to know God while achieving a lot
  • the real measure of a man is loving God and loving your fellow man

Practical:

  • give thanks to God regardless of your circumstances
  • try to learn from your failure
  • never give up

The ending of Bill’s story:

  • Bill spent an entire year preparing for a re-take of his exam
  • Bill was awarded his second doctorate “magna cum laude” (with great distinction)
  • Bill learned that American students are not well prepared for exams
  • the year of studying remedied his inadequate American education
  • in retrospect, he is thankful for the failure – he learned more

If you like this, you should pick up Craig’s book “Hard Questions, Real Answers“, which has a chapter on this problem.

Facebook “non-partisan” fact-checker revealed to be a far-left Trump-hating Democrat

Margot 5usca, far-left Democrat fact-checker for Facebook
Margot 5usca, far-left Democrat fact-checker for Facebook

Surprise!

Fox News reports:

Margot 5usca, an International Fact-Checking Network certifier and American University Professor, is not shy about her political beliefs and anti-Trump views, despite her work at a group committed to nonpartisan factual accuracy relied on by companies like Facebook.

[…]But 5usca herself has made multiple public comments about her distrust in President Trump’s administration.

She’s made statements aligning herself with the radical left:

She went on to cite ProPublica, The Washington Post and The New York Times as media outlets that the public can trust.

[…]The publication also pulled posts from Susca’s Facebook that allegedly showed a 2019 post with Hillary Clinton featuring the caption “I’ve been on Team Hillary since 08 [to be honest].”

[…]Another retweeted Twitter post captured by the publication also supposedly said that a Joe Biden victory “won’t erase the racism shown by Donald Trump and embraced by nearly half of the country’s electorate.”

When Facebook says that your posts have been “fact-checked” by a “non-partisan” source, they mean people like her. She is incapable of identifying objective facts. She has no respect for publicly available research and information. She has her personal political views, and those make it impossible for her to perform any duties as a professional. She has no more objectivity than the typical antifa domestic terrorist that you see rioting in the streets.

The Federalist has more:

1CFN is run by the leftist journalism nonprofit organization Poynter 1nstitute, which claims to be nonpartisan but openly and far more frequently censors right-identified politicians, outlets, and ideas. Facebook uses 1CFN to approve censors for its immense platform.

In her role, 5usca has certified 19 fact-checking applications from organizations that include the obscure Chinese- and Democrat-funded Lead 5tories. Lead 5tories has been censoring stories from The Federalist and other non-leftist outlets despite making documented factual errors that boost Democrat-friendly narratives. 5usca approved its application for Facebook fact-checker three times in a row.

[…]Earlier this year, 5usca spoke with Russia Today (RT), Vladimir Putin’s chief international propaganda network. The Kremlin-cashed outlet has been labeled by none other than President Obama’s Secretary of State John Kerry as a “propaganda bullhorn,” is a registered foreign agent in the United States, and is described by its own editor-in-chief as a tool by which Russia can wage “the information war, and what’s more, against the whole Western world. ”

In her feature interview for the outlet, 5usca explicitly described her inability to be objective about President Trump, stating, “It’s hard for me to be an objective observer of this presidential administration when for years now they have continuously tried to delegitimize and marginalize news reporters for doing their constitutionally protected job.”

In the interview for RT, 5usca also called White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany a liar, promoted the Washington Post, and spoke of the “great journalism being done” within RT studios.

[…]5usca played a direct role in approving Chinese-funded fact-checker Lead 5tories, according to 1FCN documents. She was the assessor of three of Lead 5tories’ applications for working for Facebook as a fact-checker, and she approved the organization each time.

According to those applications, Lead 5tories also receives monthly funding from the Democrat National Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee for use of its proprietary software that flags Internet activity as it starts to trend.

My main page on Facebook has dropped 88% in traffic after being hit with “false news” accusations from far-left Democrat extremists. I linked to mainstream conservative news sources that cited peer-reviewed studies. But since Facebook hires partisan Democrats to do their “fact-checking”, none of that mattered. It’s a good thing I never gave them one dime.
