Catholic chaplains face arrest for performing mass during shutdown

Todd Starnes of Fox News does a good job of covering the how the secular left infringes on religious liberty in the military.

Check out his latest story. (H/T ECM)

Excerpt:

The U.S. military has furloughed as many as 50 Catholic chaplains due to the partial suspension of government services, banning them from celebrating weekend Mass. At least one chaplain was told that if he engaged in any ministry activity, he would be subjected to disciplinary action.

“In very practical terms it means Sunday Mass won’t be offered,” Archbishop Timothy Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services told me. “If someone has a baptism scheduled, it won’t be celebrated.”

The Archdiocese for the Military Services tells me the military installations impacted are served by non-active-duty priests who were hired as government contractors. As a result of a shortage of active duty Catholic chaplains, the government hires contract priests.

Broglio said some military bases have forbidden the contract priests from volunteering to celebrate Mass without pay.

“They were told they cannot function because those are contracted services and since there’s no funding they can’t do it – even if they volunteer,” he said.

John Schlageter, general counsel for the archdiocese, said any furloughed priests volunteering their services could face big trouble.

“During the shutdown, it is illegal for them to minister on base and they risk being arrested if they attempt to do so,” he said in a written statement.

A well-placed source told me that a furloughed Air Force chaplain was threatened after he offered to forgo pay. The chaplain was told he could not go on base or enter his chapel offices. He was also barred from engaging in any ministry activity.

The source told me the chaplain was told that if he violated those orders he and his supervisor would be subjected to disciplinary action – with the possibility of being fired.

I don’t think anyone should be surprised that the Democrats are hostile to freedom of religion. They are, after all, socialists. Government is more important than religion, and if they conflict, government wins.

  1. Government shutdowns are not all that uncommon. What is uncommon with this particular shutdown is the methodical attempt to make everyone’s life as difficult as possible. Even though this shutdown was caused by Reid and the Democrat controlled Senate who refused to even vote on the numerous continuing resolutions sent to them by the Republicans in the House which would have kept the government open, they know that Republicans are going to get the blame for the shutdown, and this administration wants them get as much heat as possible.

    1. The only reason that Republicans get the blame for the shutdown is that Democrats keep blaming Republicans, and the liberal media only reports the Democrat side. With a country full of ignorant and misinformed people, the biased media coverage is swallowed without question. It’s easy to be a liberal – just believe everything you hear from the media. It takes critical thinking, logic, and a dedication to hearing and evaulating both sides of the story to be a conservative.

Unfortunately, there are too few who bother to learn or to think anymore. And, even more unfortunately, there are too few in the conservative camp who can articulate their position to the low-information voters. Thus, we keep seeing a shift toward liberal thinking as Democrats use this trend toward intellectual laziness as a tool to keep the uninformed in their camp. They use blaming and emotional sound bites that appeal to those who just want to be told what to think without making an effort to learn anything about the issues.

        1. I just hope they eventually realize that the problem is their poor voting. Too many are still oblivious to the problems they voted in and want to blame anybody and everybody else. Until they see the link between what they voted for and what they got, we will continue to see the same terrible results.

          1. Catholic bishops are urging their flocks to vote for Democrats for the wealth redistribution, the amnesty and yes – for Obamacare. I don’t think any of that is Biblical, but it doesn’t stop the Catholic leadership from saying it anyway.

          2. Unfortunately, it’s a lot easier to blame & swept along with the popular tide than to think.

Also, to WK’s point below about Catholic leadership directing their flocks to vote for Democrats…I’ve seen this time and again and it’s astounding. That said, they often tend to be against 2nd Amendment rights as well, and self-defense, period. (How my family—descended from devout Catholics on both sides—ended up being so conservative…I have no idea!)

          3. The funny thing is that there are lots of great conservatives in the Catholic church, like Jay Richards and Robert Sirico. But they don’t have the reins.
