Republican lawmaker introduces bill to protect questioners of Darwinism

From the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Excerpt:

An Arlington lawmaker has filed a bill aimed at protecting Texas college professors and students from discrimination because they question evolution.

The measure from Republican state Rep. Bill Zedler would block higher education institutions from discriminating against or penalizing teachers or students based on their research into intelligent design or other theories that disagree with evolution.

Zedler said he filed the bill because of cases in which colleges had been hostile to those who believe that certain features of life-forms are so complex that they must have originated from a higher power.

“We can have the academic freedom to have all kinds of ideas and philosophies but, lo and behold, even mention intelligent design and there are people that want to run you out of town on a rail,” Zedler said.

Zedler said fear of workplace discrimination is preventing evolution critics in colleges from speaking their minds.

“I do believe there are people that want to say something but … they’re afraid to because there are people around the country that have been discriminated against,” Zedler said.

Secular leftists place a great premium on getting “consensus” for whatever ideas provide maximum autonomy from moral obligations, whether the ideas are true or not. They don’t care whether the consensus is true, just that everyone agrees on it and that it produces good feelings. They just don’t handle differing points of view well… it confuses them and makes them anxious and frustrated. They are uncomfortable with concepts like being judged, or being punished. The don’t want anyone to disagree with their religion of materialism, which allows them to pursue pleasure apart from any objective moral obligations. Since the religion of materialism, which is so popular on the left, does away with morality, we have to be very careful to enshrine into the law protections for those who would dissent from this denial of objective morality. Otherwise you end up with cases like the Guillermo Gonzalez case or the Richard Sternberg case. There are no limits to what a materialist will do in order to keep up the illusion that no one is there to hold them accountable. They’ll believe anything. They’ll do anything. There isn’t anything in their materialism to stop them from committing atrocities. That’s why we need laws to contain their abuse of power.

A quotation from Martin Luther King, Jr. illustrates the point:

“It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can keep him from lynching me, and I think that’s pretty important.”

Until the time where those on the secular left learn to accept dissent, and allow debate, without resorting to insults and personal attacks, laws that protect dissenters will be necessary.

  1. I find it a bit curious that the “religion of materialism” is attributed to ‘the left’: the assumption being, if you are liberal-minded, then you must be against intelligent design, God, and all that is moral, and that you worship the world of the material. Furthermore, questioning Darwinism doesn’t signify that the questioner is of any greater moral standing than an atheist or agnostic.

As one of a great many left-leaning but heart-felt Christians, this puts me in the unique position of seeing who is pointing the finger at who. I live my life altruistically, and I have very few excesses. I cannot same the same for a single individual I know on ‘the right’, who consume for the sake of building up their own individual power.

I completely agree with the underlying message that the Republican lawmaker is trying to get across. Nowhere have I felt more out-of-place or prejudiced against than in the classroom of a college science or computer course.

That said, it is inappropriate to support his argument by drawing a line between his opposition and materialism. Materialism is traditionally a topic about wealth, greed, and power granted through objects. Besides the fact that Republicans have made it a habit to hide behind God for the sake of swaying voters into a “us vs them” mindset while all the while pushing laws that segregate the American classes and shift power towards the wealthy, materialism has absolutely nothing to do with the scientific community’s opposition to creation stories.

    1. It’s not possible to be an authentic Christian and to be on the political left. When it comes to social issues, that’s clear. Not just on things like contraception before marriage, abortion, sex education, gay rights and feminism in general, but just the general selfishness and covetousness (wealth redistribution as a way of equalizing life outcomes regardless of personal responsibility) that makes a left-leaning woman unsuitable for being a wife and mother. The Bible forbids even pre-marital sex, and yet most women think that it is a great way to get attention from men that (they erroneously think) will lead to marriage and children. How can women doubt the Bible and yet be Christians? Only by replacing the plain meaning of the words with feelings. But then they are not Christians at all – they just call themselves that. They apply the word Christianity to their feelings and their moral relativism. I think a lot of non-Christian men can use left-leaning women for sex, but they are not relationship material, and certainly not marriage material or mother material. You don’t bring a left-leaning woman home to your mother or your church – left politics is basically a confession of opposition to marriage and parenting and service to God.

I think left-leaning women can be career-women, though. They just aren’t qualified to be in relationships with men, children or God. The left-wing political mindset is not capable of understanding economics, law, morality or personal responsibility. They also don’t understand self-defense, military matters or diplomacy. How can you try to make a home with someone who is willing to steal from their own neighbors in order to make their own life easier? Why partner with someone who thinks that it is other people’s responsibility to pay for their abortion or their sex change or their fertility treatments or their breast implants? Marriage is about self-sacrifice. Not coveting, theft, waste and profligacy. And this is not even to mention the evils of no-fault divorce, custody laws, alimony, debtor’s prisons, and anti-male laws that prevent spanking and grounding of children. And not to mention the anti-parent public schools that undermine Christian parents at every turn. I could go on.

Men need to be careful about marrying uninformed women who make decisions with their feelings and haven’t read anything to get prepared for marriage and parenting. A Christian worldview rooted in the Bible is required – not the bare assertion of a slogan “I’m a Christian” and singing and jumping around in a building on Sunday. Left-wing policies hurt people by keeping them poor and robbing them of stable families and public safety (coddling criminals, opposing deterrence of crime). Left-wing = anti-human and anti-good. You can’t be altruistic by stealing and redistributing someone else’s money to encourage someone to raise fatherless children or to have sex before being married and then pay for their abortion – that’s just stealing in order to feel better about yourself. “Look! I took money from a small business owner to pay for a 12-year-old’s abortion of her born-alive baby! Isn’t that great God? I’m a Christian!”

As for you, when we say materialism, we mean the doctrine that matter is all.

  2. Your response is incredibly close-minded and offensive, because you make assumptions about left-leaning women (of which I am) that are totally incorrect. I hope you will consider discussing this with me. (And please note, I do have a sarcastic edge.)

“It’s not possible to be an authentic Christian and to be on the political left. When it comes to social issues, that’s clear.”

Politics is a multifaceted beast. ‘Social issues’ is an enormous topic, and the subjects within it are often complex. Life is not black and white, even if religion is. God does not expect us to be perfect. He gives us ground rules to follow, but tripping and losing our way is not going to make Him lose His love for us — and it is not the place of US to make judgments of damnation on other mortals.

I am very conservative when I vote on some social issues (although not all), just so you are aware. I am, however, left-leaning when it comes to the economy, and I would prefer it if our country got its fingers out of everyone else’s business and mind our people first, but that’s another issue entirely.

“Not just on … a wife and mother.”

Whoa there! You just went from a topic about materialism and protecting Christians in school to how left-leaning women (i.e, me) are covetous and selfish, and unfit to be wives and mothers. I have news for you: you have absolutely no idea what sort of person I am based solely on the fact I’m registered a Democrat.

I have an altruistic lifestyle. I make enough to get by, by choice, and I give away a lot of my excesses. I also plan to be a stay-at-home mom if I could ever find the right husband so I can be with my kids. That said, in today’s day and age, that plan is exceedingly dangerous, as even many “Christian men” can and will walk out on their wives when the going gets tough or they just get too old and ugly. And then where does that leave me, and any children? I can guarantee you that my Christian neighbors will not help in such a case, because it would be awkward and I’d just be seen as an irresponsible mooch. Oh, the shame! I can hear the gossip now.

“The Bible forbids even pre-marital sex, and yet most women think that it is a great way to get attention from men that (they erroneously think) will lead to marriage and children.”

Hi. I’m 24. I’m also a virgin, and I’m rather proud of that. I’ve never even held hands with a man who wasn’t my father or cousin. Of my college-aged peers, ZERO Republican Christians can make this claim, but about 7 other Democrats can, only 1 of them male. At what point did pre-marital sex come into this?

“How can women doubt the Bible and yet be Christians? Only by replacing the plain meaning of the words with feelings.”

Ok, if we’re going to play this game… I want you to explain to me what a mega-church needs with a 50-foot-wide high-definition screen, multi-million dollar complexes, and “programs” (i.e, clubs) that aren’t even free to use? Why do these churches ask for ‘donations’ to send the church’s own members children, usually rather affluent individuals, to places like high-end summer camps? How much of this money actually goes out to funding foodbanks, clean water, transportation, and programs designed to even give people in poverty the opportunity to help themselves? MOST of it goes to advertising, billboards, television and radio.

They get away with this by saying they are Christian, sticking some crosses up everywhere, and putting in place some well-spoken figurehead who will sing to you about God — but they are still selfish-hearted business operations.

“You don’t bring a left-leaning woman home to your mother or your church – left politics is basically a confession of opposition to marriage and parenting and service to God.”

No, left politics can just be a profession of disgust with imperialistic war, corporate control (which, by the way, is quite possibly the LEAST possible Christian thing on the face of the planet), and fascism. We’re talking about a party (Republicans) which supports such measures as stripping away everyone’s right to vote unless they own land (most of America does not, in fact, own any land), taking away women’s rights to independent, and supports putting to death anyone who doesn’t strictly agree with them (be they gay, Muslim, atheist, centrist, or just some punk-rock kid who dresses funny). Next, you’ll tell me that the white Baptist male is a specimen of the Master Race.

“I think left-leaning women can be career-women, though.”

So, essentially.. as someone with a vagina, I have two choices if I wasn’t born directly into a perfect, affluent family. I either die in poverty of some curable disease, OR I marry me a rich Christian man who can afford to care for me, himself, and all his children. Oh wait, in reality rich Christian men only marry rich Christian women. Thank you for letting me know what God’s plan for me was.

    “Marriage is about self-sacrifice.”

Yea, it is. I’m just wondering if you think that the woman is the only one who’s supposed to sacrifice. The way your post is going, it sounds like you expect them to have no identity except one which is overshadowed by their husband (who, by the way, is likely to boink their Secretary 10 years down the road because he knows the woman can’t do anything about it unless she’s ready to live on the streets and be shamed by the community — yay!). She should know that her only purpose in life is to give birth and raise your sons to hate strong-willed women.

“Men need to be careful about marrying uninformed women who make decisions with their feelings and haven’t read anything to get prepared for marriage and parenting.”

You let women read? They might start getting new ideas, that’s dangerous. Essentially, this statement says that men should be careful to marry women who will not question anything they do, no matter how perverse or undignified it may be.

“Left-wing policies hurt people by keeping them poor and robbing them of stable families and public safety (coddling criminals, opposing deterrence of crime).”

Did Glenn Beck tell you that? Right-wing policies are about shifting power towards the corporate entity and single individuals. These kinds of policies DIRECTLY CAUSE hardship and criminality. When you take a population and you take away their right to demand fair wages, their right to vote, life-saving healthcare, the means to prevent pregnancies in households where there should NOT be children (think, the projects)… and you give all the power to banks to do as they please — taking homes, creating dishonest loan situations, etc… you are creating a population that becomes desperate.

Life must be great when you already have money, but the majority of Americans run on a hamster wheel and they don’t have many opportunities to slow down and even look for better opportunities. Right-wing policies make sure that that proverbial wheel goes as fast as it can until they die.

You refer to “stealing” a lot, so I’m going to assume you’re talking about taxes. How many charities do you give to? And I mean, REALLY give to. How many of those are local? Do you kick homeless men, assuming they’re just drunkards and druggies and God put them there? As for wealth redistribution, what do you think tithes are?

Republican Christians talk an aweful lot about “personal responsibility.” YOU have a responsibility to your community. Just because someone is not in as good a place in life as you are does not mean they are not trying to take care of their responsibilities. And while there are some people that abuse “the system”, many more try to use it to get out of poverty. NOBODY LIKES BEING POOR. But if you take away their opportunities, what’s left?

Republicans think of the worst-case scenarios (12 year old abortionists? Really?) and then use that to punish every man, woman, and child who doesn’t have as much power as they do.

You can’t be a Christian if you only care about yourself.

Please name me a Republican who has proposed putting gays, Muslims, atheists, centrists, and punk rockers to death for not agreeing with them.

Also, please give me a name of a republican who said that white Baptist males are the master race.

      1. It’s so ironic. Liberals are the ones who are going around putting millions of unborn babies to death and yet they want to smear conservatives with the murderer label.

(And BTW, an unnaturally high number of unborn babies who are slaughtered are African-American here in the United States and female in places like China). So the pro-lifers are the ones who are trying to save African-American and female unborn babies and yet we’re allegedly the ones who are trying to discriminate against women and minorities.

        It’s unfair I tell ya!
