Woman defends herself from intruder using legally-owned firearm

An intruder who was shot and killed after a confrontation with a Duluth woman in her shower was likely stalking her for days and may have other victims, Gwinnett police said.

The 53-year-old woman, who is also a veteran private school counselor, was alone at the time of the Wednesday morning attack. She lives on East Mount Tabor Circle in Duluth.

The woman was getting out of the shower when she was met by a strange man with a kitchen knife, police said. They said there was a struggle in the bathroom, and she fell in the tub. Police later identified the man as Israel Perez Puentes, a Cuban national who lived in Alpharetta.

“The male was armed with a kitchen knife, a struggle ensued between the two of them. She fell in the bathtub injuring herself,” Gwinnett police spokesman Edwin Ritter said.

The woman tried to fight the man off with a shower a rod, and he forced her into her bedroom, police said. They said she told her attacker she had money in the room. But she grabbed a .22-caliber handgun and shot the man nine times, police said.

[…]Dan Tucker, a friend and neighbor, said he was amazed at how the victim defended herself against the armed intruder.

“She’s smart, she’s witty and obviously well prepared,” Tucker said.

Ritter said the shooting investigation was ongoing but defended the victim, saying the shooting appeared to be justified, and that she acted in self-defense. He said there are no plans to charge her.

Police said Thursday that neighbors had spotted Puentes’ car in the neighborhood several days before the attack but did not report it. Puentes’ estranged wife told Kavanaugh he had been arrested for burglary in Johns Creek in December.

I think it’s a very good idea for women, especially those who live alone, to have a legally owned firearm and to know how to use it.

Petition opposing UK gay marriage law gets 300,000 signatures

From the UK Telegraph. (H/T Dina)

Organisers claimed that their petition had become the biggest public campaign since the 2010 election.

It highlights the support for the traditional definition of marriage as the union of a man and a woman, they said.

Earlier this month, the Government proposed redefining civil marriage laws so that the term can apply to civil unions between same-sex couples.

[…]The Coalition 4 Marriage set up a petition against the plan, which has so far attracted more than 300,200 signatures. The group is calling on the Government to retain the current definition of marriage as the voluntary union between one man and one woman for life.

Colin Hart, the campaign director, said the surge in support since the Government began its consultation was further evidence of the unpopularity of the proposal.

“There has been a staggering response to the petition, launched last month, which shows just how many ordinary men and women care about this issue,” he said.

“I hope the Government will consider the growing opposition to its proposals, which are being pushed without the British people being given an opportunity to make their views clear.”

Mr Cameron is facing a backlash from his supporters, with senior Tory MPs expected to vote against the reforms. MPs have been promised a free vote on the issue, because it is deemed a matter of “conscience”.

However, the Prime Minister said the Conservatives should support homosexual marriage on the grounds that stability and commitment in relationships of any kind should be encouraged.

This is encouraging, because I always think of the UK as being very liberal on social issues. Even the conservatives they have are more fiscal conservatives than social conservatives. A while back I posted a secular case against gay marriage, and I hope that every one of these 300,000 signatories can explain why they believe what they believe in a similar way.

Lahore: A Christian woman was brutally tortured and paraded in the streets of a village in Pakistan’s Punjab province by a mob for her alleged “anti-Islam views”, local residents and police officials said today.

Some 30 residents of Kot Meerath village of Sialkot district, 80 km from Lahore, dragged Seema Bibi out of her house on February 26 and paraded her in the streets after shaving her head.

She was targeted by the mob for her alleged “anti-Islam views”, members of the Christian community said.

Following the assault, Seema Bibi and her family left the village to save their lives, local residents said.

“She and her family had been facing threats from a group of extremist villagers. She left the village as she had no other option,” said Aslam Masih, a resident of Kot Meerath.

[…]Police had stepped up their vigil due to tensions between Muslims and Christians in the village, he said.

Please pray for this brave woman and her family.
