After causing food prices to skyrocket, Trudeau demands tax on food retailers

According to election results in Canada, the majority of Canadian voters support left-wing economic policies. In the last election, the majority of voters supported Justin Trudeau, former part-time drama teacher, and former part-time snowboard instructor. He chose people with no earned degrees or private sector work experience to run the Canadian economy. What happened next?

Rebel News explains:

Food prices in Canada skyrocketed in 2022 owing to runaway inflation. Record numbers have accessed food banks to feed their families, with many forced to cut back — a pervasive trend that has continued midway through the year.

Canada’s Food Price Report 2023 predicted a 5% to 7% food price increase in 2023 following 10% increases last year, with vegetables, dairy and meat becoming more expensive.

As of July 2023, inflation has overtaken the Canada Food Guide, according to Health Canada. Since last updating the Food Guide in 2019, prices for the most recommended foods have sharply risen.

“Not only are some nutritious foods more difficult to find, but they can also be more expensive,” said the report Evaluation Of The Office Of Nutrition Policy And Promotion.

Only 30% of Canadians are eating the recommended minimum of five servings of fruits and vegetables daily, reported Blacklock’s Reporter.

Higher prices for basic groceries like cabbage and spaghetti are running at three and four times the rate of general inflation, showed new Statistics Canada figures.

[…][T]he average family of four is expected to spend up to $16,288.41 annually on food this year — up an additional $1,065.60 from 2022.

So what did Justin do? Well, like any other stupid communist dictator, he decided to pick someone to blame for the logical consequences of his own actions. He decided to blame the private businesses who supply people with food. He wants to tax them to punish them for the food inflation that his own spending spree caused.

Rebel News explains:

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has threatened to tax Canadian grocers in a bid to lower grocery costs for families nationwide.

[…]While at the Liberal caucus retreat in London, Ontario, Trudeau demanded that grocers devise a plan to stabilize prices by Thanksgiving. Otherwise, tax measures may be on the way for Loblaw, Metro, Empire, Walmart and Costco.

[…]Trudeau did not rule anything out on what those consequences could be, “including tax measures.”

[…]The call for relief comes as grocery prices rose 8.5% in July — nearly three times the overall inflation rate.

However, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) believes another tax will not improve affordability when Canadians go to checkouts across the country.

“The last thing Canadians need is a grocery tax,” said Franco Terrazzano, CTF Federal Director. “Instead of hammering Canadians with a grocery tax, Trudeau should scrap his carbon tax, making food prices more expensive.”

Canada has one of the highest carbon taxes in the industrialized world. I wonder if Canadian voters realized that they would have to starve, in order to save the planet from global warming?

How did this happen? Well, Justin Trudeau doesn’t have any education or experience in finance. Instead, his policies are based on his experience of growing up with a silver spoon in his mouth, thanks to his famous, rich father. All he knows how to do is to spend money to try to buy votes. And this massive spending spree has caused inflation in Canada to skyrocket. His anti-business taxes have caused businesses to raise prices just to stay open. But that’s not enough. Justin also decided to import millions of unskilled people from other countries, regardless of their ability to speak English, or work. So Canadian taxpayers have to pay more housing, education, police, and basically everything, because the demand has gone up while the supply is diminishing.

Justin thought this would make people like him. And for a while, it did. But now voters are realizing that there is a bill to pay for all of Justin’s “generosity”. And that bill has been passed on to the young people who overwhelmingly voted for him. Young people and Canada thought that they were voting for global warming, gay rights and abortion on demand through all 9 months of pregnancy. Actually, what they got was average home prices of $500,000 and starvation. I hope they are learning their lesson: don’t trust school teachers to give you an accurate view of how the world works.

CIA offered to pay analysts to change their minds on lab-leak theory

I was listening to the Bryan Dean Wright podcast this past week, and found an excellent news story that I thought everyone should know about. I think we all have concerns at this point about whether people in government can be trusted to do anything except help Democrats and punish Republicans. This story makes it clear that the CIA is one of those departments lacking integrity.

New York Post:

The Central Intelligence Agency offered to pay off analysts in order to bury their findings that COVID-19 most likely leaked from a lab in Wuhan, China, new whistleblower testimony to Congress alleges.

A senior-level CIA officer told House committee leaders that his agency tried to pay off six analysts who found SARS-CoV-2 likely originated in a Wuhan lab if they changed their position and said the virus jumped from animals to humans, according to a letter sent Tuesday to CIA Director William Burns.

Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic Chairman Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio) and Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Mike Turner (R-Ohio) requested all documents, communications and pay info from the CIA’s COVID Discovery Team by Sept. 26.

“According to the whistleblower, at the end of its review, six of the seven members of the Team believed the intelligence and science were sufficient to make a low confidence assessment that COVID-19 originated from a laboratory in Wuhan, China,” the House panel chairmen wrote.

The most senior analyst was the one most willing to cover up for the Chinese:

“The seventh member of the Team, who also happened to be the most senior, was the lone officer to believe COVID-19 originated through zoonosis.”

How were the CIA analysts paid? “a significant monetary incentive”:

“The whistleblower further contends that to come to the eventual public determination of uncertainty, the other six members were given a significant monetary incentive to change their position,” they said, noting that the analysts were “experienced officers with significant scientific expertise.”

Always remember that people in government are being paid by the money they grab from taxpayers. They ought to be serving the taxpayers who pay their salaries. But often, these are people who are on the secular left. They think the universe is an accident, that human beings are machines made out of meat, and that there is no accountability from a Moral Lawgiver. What sort of integrity would you expect from a secular leftist? They do what is best for themselves.

William Lane Craig debates Walter Sinnott-Armstrong: evil, suffering and God

This is one of the top 4 best debates that William Lane Craig has ever done in my opinion. (The other three are Craig-Millican debate and the first and second Craig-Dacey debates). If you’ve never seen Dr. Craig in a debate with a non-Christian, this one is probably the best introductory one out there. Dr. Craig is the foremost defender of Christian theism on the planet, and probably of all time.

Sinnott-Armstrong is very courteous, respectful and intelligent scholar and he is very good at defending his side. This is a very cordial and engaging debate, and because it was held in front of a church audience, it was targeted to laymen and not academics. So if you are looking for a good first debate to watch, this is it! Normally, Dr. Craig debates at major universities in front of students and faculty.

There is also a book based on this debate, published by Oxford University Press. I was actually able to find a PDF of it online. I should also remind people that you can get the wonderful Craig-Hitchens debate DVD from Amazon.com if you are looking for a debate to watch, or show in your church, this is the one to start with.

The debaters:

The format:

  • WSA: 15 minutes
  • WLC: 15 minutes
  • Debaters discussion: 6 minutes
  • Moderated discussion: 10 minutes
  • Audience Q&A: 18 minutes
  • WSA: 5 minutes
  • WLC: 5 minutes

SUMMARY:

WSA opening speech:

Evil is incompatible with the concept of God (three features all-powerful, all-god, all-knowing)

God’s additional attributes: eternal, effective and personal (a person)

He will be debating against the Christian God in this debate, specifically

Contention: no being has all of the three features of the concept of God

His argument: is not a deductive argument, but an inductive/probabilistic argument

Examples of pointless, unjustified suffering: a sick child who dies, earthquakes, famines

The inductive argument from evil:

  1.  If there were an all-powerful and all-good God, then there would not be any evil in the world unless that evil is logically necessary for some adequately compensating good.
  2.  There is evil in the world.
  3.  Some of that evil is not logically necessary for some adequately compensating good.
  4. Therefore, there can’t be a God who is all-powerful and all-good.

Defining terms:

  • Evil: anything that all rational people avoid for themselves, unless they have some adequate reason to want that evil for themselves (e.g. – pain, disability, death)
  • Adequate reason: some evils do have an adequate reason, like going to the dentist – you avoid a worse evil by having a filling

God could prevent tooth decay with no pain

God can even change the laws of physics in order to make people not suffer

Responses by Christians:

  • Evil as a punishment for sin: but evil is not distributed in accordance with sin, like babies
  • Children who suffer will go straight to Heaven: but it would be better to go to Heaven and not suffer
  • Free will: this response doesn’t account for natural evil, like disease, earthquakes, lightning
  • Character formation theodicy: there are other ways for God to form character, by showing movies
  • Character formation theodicy: it’s not fair to let X suffer so that Y will know God
  • God allows evil to turn people towards him: God would be an egomaniac to do that
  • We are not in a position to know that any particular evil is pointless: if we don’t see a reason then there is no reason
  • Inductive evil is minor compared to the evidences for God: arguments for a Creator do not prove that God is good

WLC opening speech:

Summarizing Walter’s argument

  1. If God exists, gratuitous evil does not exist.
  2. Gratuitous evil exists.
  3. Therefore, God does not exist.

Gratuitous evil means evil that God has no morally sufficient reason to permit. WSA doesn’t think that all evil is incompatible with God’s existence, just gratuitous evil.

Everyone admits that there are instances of evil and suffering such that we cannot see the morally sufficient reason why God would allow it to occur.

The claim of the atheist is that if they cannot see that there is a moral justification for allowing some instance evil, then there is no moral justification for that instance of evil.

Here are three reasons why we should not expect to know the morally sufficient reasons why God permits apparently pointless evil.

  1. the ripple effect: the morally sufficient reason for allowing some instance of evil may only be seen in another place or another time
  2. Three Christian doctrines undermine the claim that specific evils really are gratuitous
  3. Walter’s own premise 1 allows us to argue for God’s existence, which means that evil is not gratuitous

Christian doctrines from 2.:

  • The purpose of life is not happiness, and it is not God’s job to make us happy – we are here to know God. Many evils are gratuitous if we are concerned about being happy, but they are not gratuitous for producing the knowledge of God. What WSA has to show is that God could reduce the amount of suffering in the world while still retaining the same amount of knowledge of God’s existence and character.
  • Man is in rebellion, and many of the evils we see are caused by humans misusing their free will to harm others and cause suffering
  • For those who accept Christ, suffering is redeemed by eternal life with God, which is a benefit that far outweighs any sufferings and evils we experience in our earthly lives

Arguing for God in 3.

  1. If God exists, gratuitous evil does not exist.
  2. God exists
  3. Therefore, gratuitous evil does not exist.

Four reasons to think that God exists (premise 2 from above):

  • the kalam cosmological argument
  • the fine-tuning argument
  • the moral argument
  • the argument from evil
