Hugh Hewitt: is he a conservative radio talk show host?

Hugh Hewitt is a strong supporter of Mitt Romney. Let’s look at Romney’s views.

Here is Mitt Romney on abortion:

And more:

Mitt Romney on immigration:

Mitt Romney on global warming:

Here is Mitt Romney on gun control:

Here is Mitt Romney on embryonic stem cell research:

Here is Mitt Romney on the flat tax:

So long as Hugh Hewitt endorses Romney, then Hugh Hewitt is not a conservative in any sense of the word.

  1. WK, certainly it’s a strong case that electing Mitt would be a huge roll of the dice. One could question whether or not anything Mitt says really represents what he believes, or is he just saying what will (in his mushy little mind) help win votes?

My guess is that Hugh (and others like Medved who support conservative issues) are motivated by fear of 4 more years of Obama (and polls showing Mitt as the strongest threat in the general election)–which would be guaranteed disaster. Perhaps they think Mitt would be more responsive to conservative influence than Obama, and they are justified to think so. We can question whether the marginal improvement of Mitt in the White House would be sufficient to warrant support in the primary and we are right to do so.

Unfortunately, politics is a game of risk vs benefit, not merely ideology. The perfect candidate who agrees with us 100% does little good if he loses the election. OTOH if our guy wins, but governs poorly we still loose. Politics can be such a downer given that true victory is even more fleeting than that of sports championships. Thanks be to God we have a hope that can never fade away.

  2. Hewitt has been in the tank for Romney for a long, long time. Powerline Blog has been the same way. I quit listening to Hewitt along time ago, specifically because of this. I quit reading Powerline Blog for the same reason. Then they threw the liberal guy out and got Steven Hayward, so I stared reading them again. I do not have any time for people who take this viewpoint. Worldview is absolutely one of the reasons I will not vote for Romney our pay any attention to those who support him. If it is Romney and Obama, I might hold my nose and vote for him, but it will be a very difficult vote.

  3. Of course, you must understand that quite a few “conservatives” are equally pragmatists. What they stand FOR may not be WHO they stand for because, practically speaking WHO they stand for may not be “electable”, and that would be impractical in the fight against liberal candidates. (Absolutely NOT an affirmation of the practice; just acknowledgement.)

      1. Are those histories based upon positions on key issues, or more on candidates they support? Either way, the data you are basing your conclusion (Medved & Hewitt not pragmatic) is unknown to me (or forgotten). However, exhaustive knowledge is not an attribute I claim for myself. Feel free to refresh my memory.
