Social liberal Mitt Romney refuses to sign pro-marriage pledge

Socially liberal, fiscally moderate Mitt Romney refuses to sign a pro-marriage pledge.

Excerpt:

Last week, the Family Leader, a conservative pro-family group in Iowa, asked Republican presidential candidates to sign a pledge endorsing traditional marriage and other social issues. Michele Bachmann was the first to say she would sign it. Mitt Romney has decided not to. Tim Pawlenty hasn’t announced his decision.

That tells you something important about the battle for the Republican presidential nomination and the box in which Pawlenty now finds himself. Two months ago, he believed he was in a strong position to break out and become the principal alternative to front-runner Romney. Today he is trying to figure out how to prevent Bachmann from blocking his path.

[…]The calculus for Romney was the opposite, but not necessarily more difficult. Neither winning Iowa nor becoming the favored candidate of social and religious conservatives is part of his strategy for capturing the nomination or the presidency. He wants support from those values voters, but, as with others who have won the GOP nomination, he is not willing to pay any price to get it.

Here’s the pledge.

Naturally, Michele Bachmann was the first to sign it – because she is actually a social conservative.

Is Mitt Romney a social conservative?

Here’s a video of Mitt Romney expressing his social conservative credentials: (H/T Robb)

Just to refresh you, Mitt Romney also refused to sign the pro-life pledge authored by the Susan B. Anthony List. Michele Bachmann signed it, of course. Because Michele Bachmann is solid on social issues, and is a pro-life and pro-marriage activist. She doesn’t just make speeches – she has acted. It’s in her public record.

And of course Mitt Romney was praised by Al Gore for his global warming views. Seriously.

And Mitt Romney passed the Massachusetts equivalent of Obamacare, which is now way over budget. He’s not even a solid fiscal conservative.

Doctors grow new trachea from patient’s own adult stem cells

From the Wall Street Journal.

Excerpt:

Doctors have replaced the cancer-stricken windpipe of a patient with an organ made in a lab, a landmark achievement for regenerative medicine. The patient no longer has cancer and is expected to have a normal life expectancy, doctors said.

[…]The windpipe is a hollow tube, about 4.5 inches long, leading to the lungs. A key part of it is a scaffold—which functions like a skeleton for the organ—consisting of tissues such as cartilage and muscle. As a first step, a team led by Alexander Seifalian of University College London used plastic materials and nanotechnology to make an artificial version of the scaffold in the lab. It was closely modeled on the shape and size of the Eritrean man’s windpipe.

Meanwhile, researchers at Harvard Bioscience Inc. of Holliston, Mass., made a bioreactor, a shoe-box-size device similar to a spinning rotisserie machine. The artificial scaffold was placed on the bioreactor, and stem cells extracted from the patient’s bone marrow were dripped onto the revolving scaffold for two days.

With the patient on the surgery table, Dr. Macchiarini and colleagues then added chemicals to the stem cells, persuading them to differentiate into tissue—such as bony cells—that make up the windpipe.

About 48 hours after the transplant, imaging and other studies showed appropriate cells in the process of populating the artificial windpipe, which had begun to function like a natural one. There was no rejection by the patient’s immune system, because the cells used to seed the artificial windpipe came from the patient’s own body.

Another success for ethical adult stem cell research.

Tennessee Republicans pass Unborn Victims of Violence Act

From NRLC News.

Except:

Early on the morning of January 5, 2004, two men were driving their pickup truck past a woman walking up a Nashville street when she collapsed.

Antonio Dejesus Idelfonso and Eliseo Marcelino-Quintero immediately stopped to see if they had hit her and found Tracy Owen, a 32 year old pregnant woman, lying on the road crying for help. Idelfonso told police that he responded, “Here’s your help,” and shot her five times in the upper body. One of the bullets struck her preborn child. [See here.]

Idelfonso and Marcelino-Quintero said that they killed Tracy because they thought they had struck her with their pickup truck and feared they would get in trouble.

At the time Deputy District Attorney, Tom Thurman, told The Tennessean that the state’s law applied only to any unborn child able to live outside the mother’s womb.

Thankfully, as of last Friday, crimes such as these in Tennessee will now fully recognize two victims, regardless of the age of the unborn child.

With enactment of Tennessee’s 2011 expanded Unborn Victims of Violence Act, prosecutors will be able to bring charges against individuals such as Idelfonso and Marcelino-Quintero and give recognition to the humanity and life of unborn children assaulted or killed in the commission of a crime.

Together with our sponsors, pro-life state Senator Mae Beavers (R-Mt. Juliet) and pro-life state Representative Joshua Evans (R-Greenbrier), Tennessee Right to Life led the effort to expand this protection.

As the state’s oldest and largest pro-life organization, Tennessee Right to Life is leading the way to restore full protection for Tennessee’s unborn children and unborn children.

Great News from Tennessee!
