Canadian man gets 4-year sentence for 100 sexual assaults on minors

Convicted of sexually assaulting two little girls 100 times, day home operator David Watkins was yesterday sentenced to four years in prison.

After Watkins, 67, apologized to the families of the two girls and his own relatives for sexually touching the children at his Silver Springs day home, one for over a period of 15 1/2 months, provincial court Judge Allan Fradsham handed down a sentence sought by prosecutors.

[…]Watkins admitted to assaulting the girls, who were between the ages of six and eight, in the basement of his home while his wife, recovering from an injury, couldn’t venture downstairs.

Earlier in the hearing the mother of one of the girls calmly read a victim impact statement, detailing how her daughter is still too traumatized to sleep normally or sometimes use the bathroom.

“She still can’t sleep alone and she still leaves that shower curtain open,” said the mom.

“It’ll possibly haunt her for a lifetime — no child should ever have to feel so afraid.”

[…]Defence lawyer Jim Lutz argued Watkins had suffered family trauma due to his actions and that his crime was an anomaly. “The offence that occurred was out of character for him,” said Lutz, who asked for a three-year sentence.

How death panels work in the British health care system

Patients with terminal illnesses are being made to die prematurely under an NHS scheme to help end their lives, leading doctors warn today. In a letter to The Daily Telegraph, a group of experts who care for the terminally ill claim that some patients are being wrongly judged as close to death. Under NHS guidance introduced across England to help doctors and medical staff deal with dying patients, they can then have fluid and drugs withdrawn and many are put on continuous sedation until they pass away.

In a socialist system, you have value to the ruling government only so long as you are supplying the state with funds. When you start to drain funds from social programs run by the state without paying taxes, then you have no value. (This is also why socialists oppose stay-at-home mothers)

The best solution to this problem is to have everyone pay their own way – no one cares more about your safety than YOU. The best way to get quality treatment is for you to spend your own money in a market filled with service providers competing to provide you with the best health care for the lowest price.

UPDATE: Jim Hoft also notes that Comrade Jones appears to be a 9/11 Truther. He’s the kind of guy Bill Clinton has previously said should be ashamed of himself (“how dare you?”), on that ground alone.

The White House responds:

Asked if controversial White House official Van Jones continues to enjoy the confidence of President Obama given recent revelations about his involvement with those who suggest the Bush administration knew about the 9/11 attacks and allowed them to happen in order to justify a war for oil, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs Friday morning would only say “he continues to work in this administration.”
