New study: Contraceptives double risk of depression in teenage girls

The Sydney Morning Herald reports:

A Danish study of a million women has found a link between the use of hormonal contraception such as the the pill and increased risk of depression.

Compared with non-users, women and teenage girls aged 15 to 34 who used hormonal contraception had a 1.23 times higher risk of being diagnosed with depression, especially adolescents, according to a paper published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry.

Researchers at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark analysed health registry data of one million Danish women from 2000 and followed them up after an average of six years.

Of the 55 per cent of those who used hormonal contraception, there were just over 23,000 first diagnoses of depression at the time of follow up.

More than 133,000 had received their first prescription of antidepressants.

The highest risk of depression was among the adolescent girls, who had a 1.8-times higher risk of first use of an antidepressant.

The risk varied slightly among the different types of hormonal contraception, but the risk was three times higher among those who used non-oral products, such as progestogen implants.

Few studies have quantified the effect of low-dose hormonal contraception on the risk for depression, but study author Ojvind Lidegaard says their research warrants the need for further studies into the potential adverse effects of the pill.

“Use of hormonal contraceptives was associated with subsequent antidepressant use and first diagnosis of depression at a psychiatric hospital among women living in Denmark.

“Adolescents seemed to be more vulnerable to this risk than women 20 to 34 years old,” Lidegaard said.

Of course, one wonders where these studies were BEFORE the pill was championed by the radical feminists. We didn’t have studies before we adopted abortion, no-fault divorce, single mother welfare and gay marriage, either. Do you think that those might have unintended consequences? Shouldn’t we care about the consequences before we adopt policies that go against traditional moral values?

Anyway, let’s review some studies on birth control pills, since no one ever tells young people these things before it’s too late.

This is from the ultra-leftist Time magazine, of all places.

Excerpt:

Dr. David Gaist, a neurologist at Odense University Hospital and the University of Southern Denmark, and his colleagues found that women taking hormonal contraceptives — those containing estrogen, progestin or a combination of both — showed higher rates of a rare brain tumor known as glioma. Their results, published Thursday in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, raise questions about the connection between oral contraceptives and brain cancer, but shouldn’t yet be interpreted as a reason to stop taking birth control, says Gaist.

Using data from Denmark’s national registries of health records, cancer cases and prescriptions, Gaist zeroed in on the women aged 15 years to 49 years diagnosed with glioma, and then analyzed whether they were prescribed contraceptives and for how long. Overall, women who had used hormonal contraceptives at any point in their lives showed a 50% higher risk of developing the brain tumors compared to those who had not used them. And women who used the birth control for more than five years nearly doubled their risk of the cancer.

Let’s take a look at some previous studies on the effects of contraceptives.

From the Times of India.

Excerpt:

Women who take oral contraceptives regularly are at a higher risk of developing breast cancer compared to others, shows a study by AIIMS doctors. Breast cancer risk was found to be 9.5 times more in women with a history of consuming such pills. Early menstruation cycle, late marriage and lower duration of breastfeeding were the other major factors responsible for the disease among Indians, according to the study published in the latest issue of the Indian Journal of Cancer.

The study was conducted on 640 women, of which 320 were breast cancer patients. “We found long-term use of oral contraceptive pills (OCP) higher among those suffering from breast cancer-11.9%-compared to healthy individuals-1.2%,” said Dr Umesh Kapil, a professor at the public health nutrition unit, AIIMS. He said breast cancer is caused by repeated exposure of breast cells to circulating ovarian hormones, and long-term use of OCPs, which contain estrogen and progesterone, may be increasing this risk by causing hormonal imbalance.

The study mostly had women who used OCPs for birth control. Emergency contraceptives, popularly called morning-after pills, were not included.

This is not the first study, nor even the second study, to confirm this link.

Birth control pills

Many studies showed that taking birth control pills caused an increased risk of breast cancer.

Study 1: (March 2003)

RESULTS: Among the youngest age group (<35 years, n = 545), significant predictors of risk included African-American race (RR = 2.66: 95% CI 1.4-4.9) and recent use of oral contraceptives (RR = 2.26; 95% CI 1.4-3.6). Although these relationships were strongest for estrogen receptor-negative (ER-) tumors (RRs of 3.30 for race and 3.56 for recent oral contraceptive use), these associations were also apparent for young women with ER+ tumors. Delayed childbearing was a risk factor for ER+ tumors among the older premenopausal women (Ptrend < 0.01), but not for women <35 years in whom early childbearing was associated with an increased risk, reflecting a short-term increase in risk immediately following a birth.

Study 2: (October 2008)

Oral contraceptive use ≥1 year was associated with a 2.5-fold increased risk for triple-negative breast cancer (95% confidence interval, 1.4-4.3) and no significantly increased risk for non-triple-negative breast cancer (Pheterogeneity = 0.008). Furthermore, the risk among oral contraceptive users conferred by longer oral contraceptive duration and by more recent use was significantly greater for triple-negative breast cancer than non-triple-negative breast cancer (Pheterogeneity = 0.02 and 0.01, respectively).

When people talk about a war on women, maybe they should be thinking about this practice of promoting behaviors to women that make them sick. And eventually, we all have to pay for the increased costs of health care when we encourage people to do things that make them sick. We should not be promoting birth control to young women in order to enable them to have recreational sex. It’s not worth the harm it causes them. When you add in the psychological damage and the risk of abortion if the contraception fails, it really is not the right thing to tell a young woman.

Duke University volleyball player is the latest leftist to fake a hate crime

At this point, I think it’s safe to say that whenever the secular left claims to be the victim of a hate crime (or hate speech) that we should just assume they’re lying. If a full, impartial investigation finds the “victim” was telling the truth, then we can believe them. But that almost never happens.

Here’s the latest from Outkick:

BYU conducted an investigation looking into allegations made by Duke volleyball player Rachel Richardson that fans hurled racial slurs at her during a match on August 26. The university’s investigation found no evidence to support Richardson’s allegations.

The investigation’s conclusion comes as countless holes have been discovered in regard to the severe allegations made by Richardson. National media outlets blindly supported Richardson’s claims without doing any research. And now, BYU states there is zero evidence of any racial slurs.

[…]The university’s investigation included interviews with more than 50 eyewitnesses including players from both teams and athletic department staff. BYU also stated that it extensively reviewed video and audio from the match.

“From our extensive review, we have not found any evidence to corroborate the allegation that fans engaged in racial heckling or uttered racial slurs at the event,” BYU’s statement read in part. “As we stated earlier, we would not tolerate any conduct that would make a student-athlete feel unsafe. That is the reason for our immediate response and our thorough investigation.”

[…]Outside of Richardson’s godmother, who has a laundry list worth of racist rhetoric on social media, not one person has corroborated her story.

Duke University ignored the evidence, and is maintaining that BYU fans are guilty, guilty, guilty! Duke Vice President and Director of Athletics Nina King released a statement dismissing the evidence:

“The 18 members of the Duke University volleyball team are exceptionally strong women who represent themselves, their families, and Duke University with the utmost integrity,” the statement reads. “We unequivocally stand with and champion them, especially when their character is called into question.  Duke Athletics believes in respect, equality and inclusiveness, and we do not tolerate hate and bias.”

You might remember that Duke University has been involved in perpetrating other hate hoaxes. Remember when the single mom stripper complained about being raped by players from the Duke lacrosse team? Duke University, the North Carolina district attorney Mike Nifong, and all the mainstream news media believed the allegations. But there’s just one problem… the woman lied.

New York Post reported:

A Duke University lacrosse player from New Jersey, charged in the rape of a stripper at a team party, has a rock-solid alibi and documents to prove it, lawyers close to the investigation said yesterday as photos of the sordid night emerged.

Reade Seligmann, 20, of Essex Fells, N.J., has an ATM receipt, a cabdriver’s statement and dorm security records that call into doubt his being at the party at the time the woman says she was raped, said attorneys representing the lacrosse star’s teammates.

The 6-foot-1 sophomore admits being at the party, but says he left the off-campus home in Durham, N.C., less than 20 minutes after the woman arrived to perform a striptease, and before she says she was raped, the lawyers said.

“They have evidence in the form of an alibi that will clearly show at the alleged time of the rape, one of them specifically could not have been there,” said James Williams, an attorney for one of the team’s captains.

And they also say dozens of time-stamped photographs that have emerged from that night – at least one of which shows the victim smiling – exonerate Seligmann’s co-defendant, Collin Finnerty, 19, of Garden City, L.I., because he does not appear in any of the shots.

She was later convicted of murder. A real class act.

Duke University is regularly involved in scandals. Here is another famous one.

ABC News reports:

A Duke University official has been charged in federal court with offering his 5-year-old adopted son up for sex. Frank Lombard, associate director of the Center for Health Policy, was arrested Wednesday in Raleigh, the FBI said.

An unidentified informant who already faces child porn charges in a different child sex case pointed investigators to Lombard, according to court documents. The informant told investigators he had met Lombard on the Internet four years ago. The informant described in graphic detail how he allegedly observed Lombard molesting an African-American child on four occasions over an Internet video chat service called ICUii.

The informant said, according to court papers, that Lombard, who is white, said that he lived in the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina and that the child was one of two adopted African-Americans in his custody.

Lombard has been charged with attempting to induce someone to cross state lines to engage in sex with a child, punishable by a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

[…]Lombard has been employed by Duke since 1999, Schoenfeld said.

And then there was the female co-ed who published a presentation about all the Duke athletes she had recreational sex with, comparing their performance in the bedroom.

I wouldn’t send my children to Duke University. It’s a cesspool.

Should conservatives and Christians give money to Disney?

I am friends with a lot of Christians who attend mainline churches. Sometimes, the topic of Disney comes up. I try to talk to them about Disney’s actions on politics and social issues. But they don’t listen. For them, the fiction that Disney makes to entertain them is more important than the “culture war”. They know very much more about Disney fictions than they do about Disney facts.

Let’s see some Disney facts from this story in Daily Wire: (H/T Laura)

A Florida sheriff said that his department “always” caught Disney employees during undercover operations, while revealing the results of a week-long investigation into human trafficking.

The large investigation, known as “Fall Haul 2,” was spearheaded by the Polk County Police Department and involved a week-long sting operation in central Florida that netted over 150 arrests.

“Our goal is to identify victims, offer them help, and arrest those who are fueling the exploitation of human beings (Johns) and those profiting from the exploitation of human beings. Prostitution is not a victimless crime – it results in exploitation, disease, dysfunction, drug and alcohol addiction, violence, and broken families,” Sheriff Grady Judd said in a statement.

People from Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New York, California, North Carolina, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Arizona were all arrested during the undercover operation. Notable arrests included a Disney bellhop, a Georgia police deputy chief, and a high school physical education teacher.

The Disney employee, 57-year-old Guillermo Perez, was arrested for soliciting a prostitute. Perez is a bellhop for Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. While showing Perez’s photo while at the press conference, Judd suggested he was not surprised to have arrested a Disney employee.

“Now, where would we be with an undercover operation and no Disney employees?” he said. “Oh yes, we always have Disney employees.”

Also arrested was an independent photographer who the sheriff’s department said is occasionally “contracted by Disney.”

Now, you might be thinking “well, that’s just Disney employees. The company itself doesn’t take a stand on pedophilia or gr00ming children, does it?”

Here’s a report from Life News.

Excerpt:

Walt Disney World, a company founded to bring joy and entertainment to children, told employees Friday that it will pay their travel expenses to have their unborn babies aborted.

The news came after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in a historic ruling Friday morning. The Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health decision means states may protect unborn babies by banning abortions again,.

The Orange County Register reports Walt Disney World announced the new employee “benefit” in direct response to the high court ruling.

The company, which employs about 80,000 people in Florida, described the killing of unborn babies in abortions as “quality healthcare” and told Reuters that it is “committed” to ensuring its employees have access to abortions, according to the report.

A new Florida law that bans abortions after 15 weeks is scheduled to go into effect July 1. Though not a total abortion ban, pro-life advocates believe the law will save thousands of unborn babies from mid- and late-term abortions every year.

The facts of that article were also picked up in other places, like the New York Post, but I prefer to link to Life News.

Here’s an article by The Federalist, talking about the Disney employee who does the voice of the main character in a recent Disney movie:

In response to the criticisms of the bigots who complain about the presence of a same-sex kiss in a film for children, Evans, the voice of this version of Buzz Lightyear, spoke bluntly in a recent interview with Reuters Television, insisting that those who oppose LGBTQIA characters in children’s films are not worthy of your concern. Their complaints will perish with them. Their bigotry will be swept into the dustbin of history. You simply need to wait for them to enter extinction.

Previously, I wrote about how Disney opposed a religious freedom bill, and about how they supported grooming children with LGBT propaganda.

I try not to buy anything from Disney and related companies like ESPN, because I don’t want to give money to people who war against my Christian worldview and values. But it seems like in the church, people know more about Star Wars and Disney than they know about the historicity of the resurrection of Jesus. It’s astonishing, but it’s true. There’s all this emphasis on fun activities and worship songs, but no one can give a defense of the most basic Christian truth claims. Community is more important to them than knowing truth and showing their work to discover truth to others who still believe lies. “Don’t Judge!” is the new religion of the woke elites.  Star Wars is their Bible. And Disneyland is their Mecca.
