The Law Society of Upper Canada has voted 28 to 21 against the accreditation of Trinity Western University’s proposed new law school in B.C.

The vote means graduates from the B.C. university would not be able to practise in Ontario.

“Benchers took this issue very seriously, and did not find it easy to reach a decision,” said the Law Society of Upper Canada’s treasurer, in a written statement.

“As members of the legal profession, we recognize the entrenched values of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and Ontario’s Human Rights Code, including the right of equality and the right to freedom of religion, and the foundational nature of those rights to our democracy.”

Trinity Western University students must sign a strict Christian covenant governing behaviour, including abstaining from sexual intimacy “that violates the sacredness of marriage between a man and a woman.”

Critics say the covenant essentially bans anyone in a gay relationship from enrolling in the school.

Earlier this month, the West Coast Legal Education Action Fund, a non-profit organization founded to ensure women’s equality rights under the law, argued against the university law school’s accreditation in B.C.

It’s important to note that Canada was one of the first countries to legalize same-sex marriage, so they are a sort of crystal ball for us to see what happens when a country does that. In my opinion, when people say “I am for same-sex marriage”, what they really mean is that if you disagree with them on that, then you need to be forced to agree with them, or else. That is what happens when the definition of marriage in society changes and dissent becomes a crime. Just ask Frank Turek or Brendan Eich how tolerant the gay left is of different views.

  1. I wonder what they would say to lawyers trained up in Sharia law and wanting to practice law in Ontario? Is this an anti-religion of anti-christian bias being exposed? Given how western law practice owes much to Christian principles of justice, this is odd indeed. It tells us how leftists are consciously wanting to use law to usurp civilized society.

  2. I don’t understand how abstaining from sexual intimacy equates to banning gay relationships. Perhaps I’m over-reaching, but it IS possible to be a Christian and gay.

    1. Say what? Who wants to or even could ban gay relationships?
Of course you can be a Christian and gay, but you would be a Christian who is living in sin. And there are always consequences for sin.

  3. The action of these Bar Societies should be challenged in court. They are statutory bodies and should have no right to bar anyone from practicing law on the basis of conditions they were required to accept in order to gain admission to a law school. These graduates may or may not truly hold the beliefs expressed by the school. It may be that it was the only one they could get into because of the very competitive nature of law school admissions. In any event, no Bar Association has the right to interrogate Bar admittees on the basis of their religious, political, social or other beliefs; and they certainly have no right to IMPUTE certain beliefs on the basis of coerced admission pledges. Our Constitution explicitly protects our rights to freedom of thought, expression and belief. Provincial Bars have plenty of scope for disciplining members whose ethical and legal PERFORMANCE falls below the required standard. They have no business presuming moral turpitude by association. I am shocked that this debate was even entertained by Bar associations! It shows a disgraceful disregard for the rule of law and disrespect for the fundamental constitutional benefit of every Canadian citizen.
