Democrats win Virginia governorship, aided by Democrat-funded Libertarian candidate

At the time of writing, it looks like the Libertarian candidate has succeeded in guaranteeing that Democrat policies will be implemented in Virginia.

Election results: (at time of writing)

  • Terry McAuliffe (D) 47.4% 1,021,298 votes
  • Ken Cuccinelli II (R) 46.0% 989,584 votes
  • Robert Sarvis (L) 6.6% 142,338 votes

Libertarian candidates don’t usually draw 7% of the vote – so what happened?

The Blaze explains in this article.

Excerpt:

A major Democratic Party benefactor and Obama campaign bundler helped pay for professional petition circulators responsible for getting Virginia Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Robert C. Sarvis on the ballot — a move that could split conservative votes in a tight race.

Campaign finance records show the Libertarian Booster PAC has made the largest independent contribution to Sarvis’ campaign, helping to pay for professional petition circulators who collected signatures necessary to get Sarvis’ name on Tuesday’s statewide ballot.

Austin, Texas, software billionaire Joe Liemandt is the Libertarian Booster PAC’s major benefactor. He’s also a top bundler for President Barack Obama. This revelation comes as Virginia voters head to the polls Tuesday in an election where some observers say the third-party gubernatorial candidate could be a spoiler for Republican Ken Cuccinelli.

[…]According to Virginia election filings posted by the Virginia Public Access Project, Liemandt contributed $150,000 of the Texas-based Libertarian Booster PAC’s $229,000 revenue. The Libertarian Booster PAC reported providing $11,454 to pay for signature collection, yard signs and campaign materials for Sarvis and another $4,690 for four Libertarian candidates running for the Virginia state legislature.

I do think that it’s OK to vote Libertarian when an election is not in doubt, but this election was close. Cuccinelli has an “A” rating from the NRA, but McAuliffe has an “F” rating from the NRA. He is very likely to put in stricter gun control measures in Virginia. I hope that people learn something about politics from this election. I would really like to see short and long guns banned completely in Virginia, and door-to-door confiscations by SWAT teams. Maybe then libertarians will learn the consequences of their voting from real life.

  1. I am so mad about this. McAuliffe is horrible – not just on gun control, but he’s an Obama supporter and very pro-abortion. We got totally screwed and I am not looking forward to 6 years of this guy.

  2. McAuliffe is indeed terrible, but unforunately a lot of the “moderate” Republicans in, say, Northern Virginia really, really, really hated Cucinelli — especially women. He was the kind of candidate who could win in Utah, or maybe even Texas, but really hard to do that now in Virginia with all the newcomers in Northern Virginia, who are kind of purplish more than red Republicans.
