In Iran, convicted virgins are raped by prison guards prior to being executed

Story from the Jerusalem Post via Mark Steyn at the Corner. (H/T ECM)

Excerpt:

He said he had been a highly regarded member of the force, and had so “impressed my superiors” that, at 18, “I was given the ‘honor’ to temporarily marry young girls before they were sentenced to death.”

In the Islamic Republic it is illegal to execute a young woman, regardless of her crime, if she is a virgin, he explained. Therefore a “wedding” ceremony is conducted the night before the execution: The young girl is forced to have sexual intercourse with a prison guard – essentially raped by her “husband.”

“I regret that, even though the marriages were legal,” he said.

Why the regret, if the marriages were “legal?”

“Because,” he went on, “I could tell that the girls were more afraid of their ‘wedding’ night than of the execution that awaited them in the morning. And they would always fight back, so we would have to put sleeping pills in their food. By morning the girls would have an empty expression; it seemed like they were ready or wanted to die.

This is the kind of story that makes me cry.

We could have been using our tremendous resources to support the Iranian pro-democracy movement, instead of piling up more and more entitlements for ourselves at home.

  1. How tragic. And while the post didn’t elaborate, don’t you get the feeling that these women hadn’t done anything deserving death to begin with?

And things like this make me picture postmoderns prattling on about how morals are relative. Sure.

    1. I have an idea that women are supposed to be loved, protected and provided for by men. And not just her husband, but all unmarried men should consider it a great thing to treat women kindly, regardless of whether the men find her attractive or not.

Last week at work, I stayed late to help two different Democrat women on two different nights. I don’t agree with them on hardly anything. But women were created to know God and they have the same intrinsic value as men. It is never a waste of time to treat them with dignity – what they think and believe is priority one for any man. And men can start by treating them with kindness.

  2. Ironically, Rachael, my faith in God as well as humanity has just been strengthened after reading this piece. I read the entire news in a local newspaper, and this guard who has spoken has just been released from detention. He was arrested for letting free a 13 year old boy and a 15 year old girl who were arrested for protesting against the June presidential election results. This could mean just one thing : Change of heart. This guy had the heart to let go a virgin who could have been subjected to the same atrocity and has opened up to speak about the atrocities that are happening there in Iran, despite the obvious risk that surrounds him and his family. Who could bring about such change in a man’s heart?

When I read this news this morning, I was thinking about feminists. Those women who consider babies in their wombs as parasites who invade their body and personal space. Women to whom feminism is all about self. Isn’t feminism more than just defending your own rights? Isn’t it about speaking for innocent girls like those in Iran who don’t even have a voice of their own to defend themselves from such obvious acts of perversion?

    1. Wow! Great point, Shalini. Where are the American feminists? Why aren’t they standing up for the basic human rights of women in other countries? Or is feminism about something else entirely?
