Hugo Chavez shuts down 34 radio and TV stations in Venezuela

CARACAS, Aug 1 (Reuters) – More than a dozen of 34 radio stations ordered shut by the Venezuelan government went off the air on Saturday, part of President Hugo Chavez’s drive to extend his socialist revolution to the media.

The association of radio broadcasters said 13 stations had stopped transmitting, following an announcement Friday night by government broadcasting watchdog Conatel that 34 radio outlets would be closed because they failed to comply with regulations.

Critics said the crackdown infringed on freedom of speech and that owners were not given the right to a proper defense.

“They’re closing the space for dissidents in Venezuela,” William Echeverria, head of the National Council of Journalists, told RCTV, a private cable TV station, which did not have its broadcasting license renewed in 2007.

Chavez defended the closures, calling them part of the government’s effort to democratize the airwaves.

“We haven’t closed any radio stations, we’ve applied the law,” Chavez said on state television. “We’ve recovered a bunch of stations that were outside the law, that now belong to the people and not the bourgeoisie.”

Chavez supporters say they are waging a “media war” against private news companies and have denounced in recent days what they say is a renewed offensive by privately owned domestic and international media to discredit Venezuela.

The Road to Serfdom. Venezuela is just a little further along the road than we are. For now.

What socialists did to the economies of Cuba and Venezuela

Article from Babalu blog. (H/T ECM)

Cuba:

Cuba was a small island nation that once was the biggest producer and exporter of sugar in the world. Once La Revolución got its paws on it though, it was systemically destroyed to the point that the island cannot even produce enough to supply its own populace with the sweet spice.

Venezuela:

Enter Chavez with his Revolución Bolivariana, and in a few short years they have gone from one of the biggest producers of some of the best Arabica coffee beans in the world, to now facing, for the first time in history, the prospect of having to import its coffee.

Socialism doesn’t work.

John McCain tells Obama that Honduras was right to kick Zelaya out

The Hill has a post up about McCain’s response to the Honduras crisis. (H/T Gateway Pundit)

They quote McCain’s Twitter feed:

Violence and unrest in Honduras & China – we need to continue to stand up for human rights and democracy around the world!

I regret the military takeover in Honduras, but it’s clear President Zelaya was in violation of his country’s constitution.

The Hill writes:

McCain’s statement runs in direct conflict with the Obama administration’s position on the coup. Last week, the president said that the coup was “not legal” and that Zelaya is still the president of the Latin American nation.

Members of Congress have generally been mum on the situation, but some tensions are beginning to show, especially amongst Republicans. Rep. Connie Mack (R-Fla.) said that Zelaya “trampled on the Honduran constitution” and called the Honduran president’s effort to extend his term a “blatant power grab.”

Zelaya proposed a constitutional referendum that would allow him to seek reelection, superceding term limits layed out in the country’s constitution. Members of the Honduran military arrested him and forced him into exile on June 29.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with the ousted president today.
