Walter Williams and Thomas Sowell discuss the changing meaning of poverty

My two favorite economists! (8.5 minutes)

They mention the book “Life at the Bottom”. The book is free, and you can read all the chapters online right here.

  1. A few of us at work were talking and one of my engineers said, “You know, most of Africa has smartphones.” I found the statement to be absolutely ludicrous. Africa? They’re starving to death over there. They have cell phones? Then I looked it up. On a continent with a population slightly over 1 billion there are over 500 million cell phone users. Seriously? Okay, perhaps “most” was an exaggeration on his part, but … seriously?! Yes, “poverty” isn’t a constant. We should tell people, “You keep using that word. I do not think that word means what you think it means.”
