Story here from defense analyst Frank Gaffney.
Excerpt:
At a White House celebration of Ramadan tonight in the company of representatives of several of the Nation’s most prominent Muslim Brotherhood front organizations, President Obama announced his strong support for one of their most immediate objectives: the construction of a mega-mosque and “cultural center” at Ground Zero. In so doing, he publicly embraced the greatest tar-baby of his presidency.
Obama actually wants Americans to not just tolerate the 9/11 mosque – but to respect it.
Gone too is the option of continuing to conceal an extraordinary fact: the Obama administration is endorsing not only this “local matter,” but explicitly endorsing the agenda of the imam behind it – Feisal Abdul Rauf. Rauf is the Muslim Brother, who together with his wife Daisy Khan (a.k.a. Daisy Kahn for tax purposes, at least) runs the tellingly named “Cordoba Initiative.” He is believed to be on a taxpayer-underwritten junket and/or fund-raising tour of the Middle East, courtesy of the State Department, which insists that he is a “moderate” in the face of abundant evidence to the contrary. Interestingly, the President’s rhetoric – like that of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other apologists for and boosters of the GZM – tracks perfectly with the Muslim Brotherhood line about why we need to allow what Lieutenant General William “Jerry” Boykin has correctly described as an “Islamist victory arch” close by some of America’s most hallowed ground. It is, we are told, all about “religious freedom” and “tolerance.”
Actually, it is all about submission to shariah – arguably the most intolerant of theo-political-legal codes, ironically particularly when it comes to respect for freedom of religion. Rauf’s mosque complex and the shariah ideology/doctrine that animates it – the same program that animated the jihadists who destroyed the World Trade Center and many of its occupants on 9/11 – has everything to do with power, not faith.
The rest of Gaffney’s first article has profiles of some of the people who attended the dinner, like these:
Ingrid Mattson heads the largest Muslim Brotherhood front in the country, the Islamic Society of North America. ISNA was an unindicted co-conspirator in the biggest terrorism financing trial in the nation’s history and was identified as a Brotherhood “associated or friendly” group in documents introduced as evidence uncontested in that Holy Land Foundation prosecution. Ms. Mattson now presides over the selection, training and certification of Muslim chaplains for the U.S. military and prison system – interestingly, a job formerly in the hands of Muslim Brother Abdurahman Alamoudi, the founder and first head of the American Muslim Council, who is currently serving a 23-year sentence on terrorism charges.
Salam Al-Marayati is president of the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC). In 1999, then-House Democratic Leader Richard Gephardt withdrew his nomination of Al-Marayati to a leadership position on the National Commission on Terrorism when it became public that Al-Marayati claimed that the terrorist group, Hezbollah, was a legitimate organization and has the right to attack the Israeli Army.
I note that Gaffney has a follow-up post with the response from the families of 9/11 victims.
Thanks for this post.
I needed a full report, as I have only heard snippets of the story.

Douglas Wilson equates the GZM to disturbance of the peace.

Nice. If 4 Christians in Dearborn talking about the gospel is distrubing the peace, then surely this is disturbing the peace!

Scary. You’d think that genuine muslim moderates would oppose the placement of such a mosque on the basis of poor taste.

That would require moderate Muslims to speak out against radical Muslims, which I believe they have never have any intention of doing.

I don’t understand why having a mosque close to ground zero is poor taste? I am sure that there are many other places of worship in the area. Is it that people think that this New York Islamic group is in some way responsible for the attacks on 9/11? That would be like saying that all Christians are responsible for the actions of Catholic priests, or all atheists are responsible for the actions of Stalin (I know the latter is a popular argument by some debaters).

It demonstrates a complete lack of sensitivity to those who suffered and brazen bloodymindedness. There was an incident of a group of nuns who wanted to build a nunnery near one of the former Nazi concentration camps in Germany and to pray from there for the souls of those who died at the hands of the Nazis. However, Pope John Paul II stepped in and said rather not to build one there because it would be insensitive to Jewish people. Were those nuns responsible for the actions of Hitler et al? Of course not. Did they have any evil intentions in building a nunnery and praying for people. Of course not. However, I think John Paul was wise to suggest that they build it elsewhere. For the record, I am not Catholic.

So if you you are consistient in your views then you would also object to a Christian church, Jewish synagogue or Hindu temple in the immediate vasinity of ground zero. Is that what you are saying?

No.
Jewish people have a lot of pain surrounding the Holocaust – understandably. One needs to be sensitive to what might make it worse for them.
For the American people, Ground Zero brings up a lot of pain too. One needs to be sensitive to what might make that pain worse. Considering that the 9/11 attacks were perpetrated by Islamic radicals in pursuit of a “victory” over America, their dogged insistence on building a mosque in that spot, as opposed to somewhere else, can only be ascribed to a tasteless desire to provoke. The article from Charles Krauthammer, which WK linked to, explains it well. “The governor of New York offered to help find land to build the mosque elsewhere. A mosque really seeking to build bridges, Rauf’s ostensible hope for the structure, would accept the offer. “

No that’s not what she is saying. You seem to have completely missed her point.
The attack which was orchestrated on 9/11 was specifically called a Jihad. Look that word up. Those terrorists on that plane thought they were doing a favour to their religion by doing the heinous act. And that’s why building a mosque near that place would be insensitive while a church, synagogue or temple won’t. They would build it else where if they really care about building relationships. Since they are being so insistent about building the mosque right where it would hurt, they should probably cut the sugar-coated crap about ‘building peace’ and admit that they don’t care one wit about the feelings of the families of the deceased.
BTW, there was a Greek Orthodox ‘Church’ near the WTC which was also destroyed that day. It still hasn’t been built and they still have problems getting approval from the authorities.

Seems that the American people have issues with the building of mosques in other places too, not just around ground zero.
Funny clip with some references to the other places that people are intolerant (and so funny too)…

Correction: atheism is responsible for the actions of Stalin, not atheists

This is an ignorant statement. Ideology was responsible for Stalin’s actions. The lack of belief does not drive people to do bad things, bad beliefs make people do bad things.

Moo, there is no such thing as a “lack of belief”. That would be having no brain at all. If you think, you believe certain things.
When people don’t believe in God they substitute something else in His place – which is the ideology you speak of. In Stalin’s case, it was an ideology of man being in control instead of God and of control being given to a select few – i.e. the state.

“That would be having no brain at all.”
LOL! I’m not saying anything about this.
But here are the facts on Stalin and how his atheistic beliefs led naturally to mass murder.

Atheism ideology can clearly explain why Stalin did what he did.
Lack of belief? No such thing, belief is a stance. You can only lack belief if you are not aware, never been exposed to, and have not made a stance on an issue/topic.
‘Lack of belief’ is one of those unfounded arguments from Atheists.

Wake up America, Islam is a trojan horse. I challenge you to do a study of the history of Islam and its tenets and you will be able to make your own mind about its goals and Intent. ” My people perish for lack of Knowledge”. There is a whole lot of information out there, pro and con. I discovered one thing you need to know, It is perfectly OK for a muslim to lie if it enhances Islam, Check it out for yourself, don’t take my word or anyone else’s but if I ‘m correct you can’t trust anything they say. It is a doublespeak so called religion. In reality it is a way of life, they do not separate politic from religion . That’s why they want Sharia law fostered in,just like
in Europe. Folks, this a serious problem we will face more and more as they use our own constitution against us, but ask yourself one question or better yet ask a muslim, If they are tolerant and want us to be tolerant, would it be OK to put a church or synagogue in Mecca? We are being deceived at our peril because we want to except and respect everyones right to worship. Please, as a warning I implore you to find for yourself the truth. Look at what they do not what they say.
