Story here in the Gainesville Sun.(H/T Why Boys Fail)
They focus mostly on the gender gaps in Florida universities, but I think these schools reflect the national situation. Boys are falling behind girls in schools, and in life.
Excerpt:
Women make up 57 percent of college enrollment nationally, according to the most recent federal statistics. In Florida, five of the 11 state universities have female enrollments topping 60 percent.
…Graduation rates support the thought. More than 63 percent of women graduate from UF in four years, compared with 42 percent of men.
I agree with this statement from Thomas Mortenson, a senior scholar at the Pell Institute for the Study of Opportunity in Higher Education:
He calls for changing the way in which boys are educated. Boys learn through a more active, hands-on learning style than girls, he said. Mischief-making boys are treated as criminals or sent to special education classes, he said.
“Boys aren’t allowed to be boys today,” he said. “They’re treated as defective girls.”
Does anyone care enough to ask men why they are not motivated? Are there proper schools, teachers and incentives in place to prod men towards responsible manhood?

I think the big problem is that the curriculum has become so dumbed-down and touchy-feely fare that alienates most young males who are far more interested in concrete knowledge and not the faddish nonsense that makes up K-12 education today, where, for example, history has long since been replaced w/ “Social Studies” (wherein I learned gems like the evil white man was completely responsible for slavery and caused a ‘brain drain’ on Africa and that is why the place is such a basket case these days–and, no, I am not making this up–and that was circa the early 90s so I can only imagine how much worse it’s gotten in the ensuing years).
Re-focus (or at least balance out) the curriculum on science, math and the like (things that boys always excel at over girls) and you’ll see this problem fix itself in no time flat. (This, of course, will never happen, but I can dream, can’t I?)
(And yes, treating young boys who act like boys as a criminal class of sorts is part of the problem, but I think it’s more a symptom than the root cause. And yes, I’ve read “The War on Boys” etc.)

Wow. I’d never thought of that. Could it be that white males simply tune out when the curriculum bashes them (and their role in founding the United States) in every subject?
I did think that the curriculum had been made anti-male by refusing to study anything men find interesting, but it’s true that when the curriculum goes all multi-cultural, males will be left out and that removes all kinds of wars, inventions and disagreements that men find much more interesting.

It’s like the point you made a few months back about how males are not catered to in today’s feminized religions–it’s the same exact thing in a different venue.

Yes, that’d be the one. After you wrote that I sort of did some completely anecdotal extrapolations/observations based on that formula and I was somewhat surprised by how applicable it could be to a whole array of events.
