Are polar ice caps really melting due to global warming?

Are global warming alarmists wrong?

Consider this article from The Australian: (H/T Watts Up With That)

ICE is expanding in much of Antarctica, contrary to the widespread public belief that global warming is melting the continental ice cap.

The results of ice-core drilling and sea ice monitoring indicate there is no large-scale melting of ice over most of Antarctica, although experts are concerned at ice losses on the continent’s western coast.

Antarctica has 90 per cent of the Earth’s ice and 80 per cent of its fresh water. Extensive melting of Antarctic ice sheets would be required to raise sea levels substantially, and ice is melting in parts of west Antarctica. The destabilisation of the Wilkins ice shelf generated international headlines this month.

However, the picture is very different in east Antarctica, which includes the territory claimed by Australia.

East Antarctica is four times the size of west Antarctica and parts of it are cooling. The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research report prepared for last week’s meeting of Antarctic Treaty nations in Washington noted the South Pole had shown “significant cooling in recent decades”.

And here’s the graph that goes with the findings:

Why are global warming alarmists wrong?

Now we know that they’re wrong. Why are they wrong? Well, maybe I should start by showing that the media is cherry-picking data in order to delude the public. This post by Anthony Watts which explains how the media deliberately recycles the images and stories about imminent climate catastrophes. This time, it’s about a vast antarctic shelf that’s about to collapse.

Only one problem. It was just about to collapse last year, but the media is re-using the the same scary stock photo and story again this year and telling us again that it’s just about to collapse.

Excerpt:

Those masters of disaster are at it again, and it appears our friendly scientists at that National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) help this story along each year.

…It seems that not only is the photography recycled, so is the storyline. It seems to happen every year, about this time. Note the photos show shear failure and cracks, not melted ice. Shear failure is mostly mechanical-stress related, though ice does tend to be more brittle at colder temperatures.

National Geographic reported this story headline last year, March 25th 2008.

…From the Nat Geo story:

“[It’s] an event we don’t get to see very often,” Ted Scambos, lead scientist at the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado, said in a press statement.

Now, how is it that an ice shelf breaks up in the spring of 2008 and again in the spring of 2009 and it’s “not very often”? Hmmm.

Watts goes on in his post to take a look at how much the ice shelf has really changed over the years (it hasn’t) and whether the air temperatures have gotten warmer (theyhaven’t) such that the air would be causing cracks. So all we really have is a scary re-used photo and a lot of propaganda.

What are the economic effects of policies based on global warming alarmism

Well, to start with, we’re going to lose a lot of jobs, due to increase taxation and regulation of “the rich” and “greedy corporations”. And, the EPA is going to raise consumer energy prices and put American money in the pockets of terrorists, by curtailing domestic energy production. And, we’re going to waste tons and tons of taxpayer money subsidizing corporations to be “green”.

The good news: public opinion is shifting away from global warming alarmism

A recent Rasmussen Reports poll shows that there is hope. (H/T The Chilling Effect)

Global Warming is Primarily Caused By…
Date Human activity Planetary Trends Other Reason
Apr 09 34% 48% 7%
Mar 09 41% 43% 7%
Feb 09 38% 45% 7%
Jan 09 44% 41% 7%
Dec 08 43% 43% 6%
Apr 08 47% 34% 8%

So at least we’re slowly winning the battle for truth. Unfortunately, Obama has got until 2010 until he can be challenged in the mid-term elections.

  1. Why are evangelical christians so anti-environment?

The idea that the human population can keep expanding, consuming and polluting indefinitely on a planet with finite space and resources is ludicrous. If global warming is not convincing to you, pick another issue. There’s plenty of other environmental problems that the media doesn’t focus on.

  2. I love the tree huggers when confronted with the truth and facts simply switch arguments. As Craig says well if not this then just pick another example, we must be doing something wrong. Kind of like spanking a kid for something they didn’t do and then saying oh well, he probably did something bad yesterday and didn’t get caught. How about the planet can adapt, just like people. I remember the hole in the ozone from spray cans, we were going to burn up in the 60’s then it was the great ice age of the 70’s, then Al Gore brought us global warming, when that went to pot, it was climate change. Something at last they are comfortable with, after all it happens four times every year.

    1. You may want to re-read his argument, there was no “side-switching” as you claim, just pointing out that there are many issues involving pollution.

You’re lying about the ozone burning people up in the 60’s since it wasn’t discovered until 1985 by British scientists Joesph Farman, Brian Gardiner, and Jonathan Shanklin of the British Antarctic Survey. Source: http://www.theozonehole.com/ On top of that, it’s a very well known and studied problem that is caused/exacerbated by certain types of spray cans that are no longer used.

The earth doesn’t have to adapt – it’s a rock “flying” through space; the living creatures that inhabit the earth have to adapt.

A new article just published is purporting a new theory – black soot, not greenhouse gases, are responsible for glacial melt. Source: http://www.livescience.com/environment/091214-black-carbon-himalaya-glacier.html As the glaciers melt, how do you propose the Earth “adapts”? Maybe it will grow more glaciers? No, all the inhabitants that relied on glacial melt have to move to find new sources of fresh water.

Wintery – you give one example of a communist country that has treated it’s resources poorly – but china has only done so in the pursuit of capitalistic goals. Communist countries like vietnam and north korea has huge lush, pollution free rivers and forests with very little capitalism going on. China has capitalist centers and is pursuing limited free markets, and as you say, have huge problems with pollution.

      1. China is communist, the USA is moderately capitalist. They’re dirty, we’re clean. Private ownership creates stewardship, government ownership creates pollution. The most capitalist countries are the cleanest and most prosperous, the least capitalist are filthy and impoverished.

        1. we’re clean because the government enforces it with agencies like the EPA. Our history is rife with examples of industry polluting so badly that rivers catch on fire, etc. It’s not capitalism that produces clean environments, it’s the government forcing industry to comply, otherwise no industry would spend money on cleaning up the environment when that money could be put into the pockets of the investors and the management.

China has plenty of industries, but no political will to clean itself up. The other two countries I mentioned (N. Korea & Vietnam) are very impoverished, but have no industry, i.e., no capitalist aspirations and no pollution

          1. I’d say communism is more about big government and control.

In countries like China, the government is more concerned about censoring the Internet, the libraries, and basically to indoctrinate the citizens rather than cleaning up the environment.

      2. Vietnam is one of the filthiest countries I’ve ever been to. Pollution free? No way.
Interesting to travel the thru forested areas, that are littered to the hilt.

  3. The global warming unscientific scam is all about bringing everyone under the control of a one world government run by the UN. The ultimate outcome would destroy the Western Civilization as we know it to be at this time. Very little time is left to focus on the real issues which would not only destroy the western civilization and the UN one world government. That issue is the radical islamic terror at out doorstep. The 50 year islamic war started on 9/11 and will be at its most destructive phase once Iran has the bomb along with Russian advanced missle technology. It is then, or possibly at any time, we will probably see an attack on Isarel, the middle east oil fields AND suitcase bombs going off in several American cities. Is this possible or likely? Yes it is if we do not act immediately in reseting the course of America to face up the the real global threats, end the corruption of Washington. We restore ourselves thru prayer, removing the corrupt leaders by voting them out, and drilling our own oil which is pleantiful in the USA. We need to get down on our knees and pray for devine guidance and for leadership and vision as we had when our country was first born.
